Well there are two totally different categories, imo. There are cities that people go to for vacations and then resort towns or towns that were very popular and kind of organically became resort towns.
Cities people go to for vacations: NYC, Los Angeles, DC, the Bay Area, and Boston . Maybe Chicago. You have New Orleans, Las Vegas, and Miami, the first two which derive almost of their fame and value from tourism. These are much more visited than larger cities like Dallas, Houston, Philly, and Atlanta.
Then there are the smaller cities that have huge tourism industries like Nashville, Charleston, Austin, and Portland (which has likely been hurt by the 2020 protests).
I’ve been to almost of them and based on where you’ve been, I would recommend LA or DC in any season, Chicago in the summer/late spring, and Miami in the fall or winter.
Then you have the resort towns. I have been to fewer of these and the ones to visit are based much more on your preference. Do you like the beach? The mountains? Wine? Different architecture? Spiritual stuff?
I would say that California has a ton to offer there: Napa/Sonoma, Lake Tahoe, towns like Monterrey, Carmel by the Sea, even Solvang, and the nature of Yosemite.
Other places that I haven’t been to but I know are well-liked would include Sedona, Santa Fe, Jackson Hole (especially if you are an advanced skier).
I’ve been to Cape Cod and it’s cool but nothing jaw-dropping, although if you go to Boston, you can extend your trip there. Same with the Hamptons and NYC. Didn’t care for the Hamptons (I guess I didn’t have access to the most upscale parties
).
Also never been to Key West or any of the islands of Hawaii and would like to go one day.

Flew to Lake Tahoe last August. Loved it.
Got great weather during the day and sunsets like this daily.

Drove around South Utah for 10 days last year checking out 5 different National Parks: Canyonlands, Arches, Capitol Reef, Bryce, and Zion. It was incredible.

I came here to say Tahoe too. Beaches AND mountains. Where can you go wrong?

Napa/Sonoma/Muir Woods area
If it’s just a city, San Diego.

Just outside Charleston on the beach. The beach isn’t the best, but is more than adequate. Having Charleston nearby for food/nightlife/history is nice

Chicago is a cleaner and less smelly New York

An American Dream
I’ll be in Puerta Backyarta this season.

I beg your pardon, mama, what did you say?
My mind was drifting off on Martinique Bay.
It's not that I'm not interested, you see;
Augusta, Georgia is just no place to be.
I think Jamaican in the moonlight Sandy beaches, drinking rum every night
We got no money, mama, but we can go;
We'll split the difference, go to Coconut Grove
Keep on talking, mama, I can hear Your voice,
it tickles down inside of my ear
I feel a tropical vacation this year Might be the answer to this hillbilly beer
I think Jamaican in the moonlight Sandy beaches, drinking rum every night
We got no money, mama, but we can go;
We'll split the difference, go to Coconut Grove
Voila! An American Dream
Where, we can travel girl, without any means
When it's as easy as closing your eyes
And dream Jamaica is a big neon sign
Just keep talking, mama, I like that sound
It goes so easy with that rain falling down
I think a tropical vacation this year Might be the answer to this hillbilly beer
Voila! An American Dream
Yeah, we can travel, girl, without any means
When it's as easy as closing your eyes
And dream Jamaica is a big neon sign
Just think Jamaican in the moonlight

Ignore the downvotes, we all know 90% of the OT is renting a cabin, riding a mobility scooter to the Pancake House, then buying 15 loaves of cinnamon bread from Dollywood 2x a year.

I love visiting there. Take the ferry over to Peaks Island, rent a golf cart and drive around the whole island.. well worth a half day trip.

My favorite vacations these days include those that are absent of towns, or cities, or people in general for that matter, except for those I want to be around. I am trying to take a break from those with whom I need to take an actual “vacation” from.

First off, let me say I love the Florida Keys and anywhere in the smokey mountains around Tennessee and NC.
But my wife and I wanted to pick a random coastal town, not too big, not too small to peruse for our 7th anniversary coming up. We landed on Savannah, GA. Any input? Recommendations?
*in before trashy; you’re poor*

I chose to live somewhere I would vacation at, and getting away from certain people helped.
