Before I hiked the Appalachian Trail $100, After hiking the Appalachian Trail $50k. Learned that the simple life was much more enjoyable.

If I'm single, there's nothing I can't do with a $40k salary. I'm pretty low maintenance. Now once my SO and I get hitched we're going to need at least $100K.

I was living off of $40k before I got married, had a roommate paying me $300/month and was comfortable.
After marriage, 2 daughters and more pets than I wish to feed, it's amazing how fast money disappears.

how old are you? You obviously either have a cell phone bill or an electricity/internet bill. Who is paying for that? What about water Opie? just pulling it out of the river?
Turn 54 coming Monday, just got billed for electricity for last month, $85 and change, water runs a flat $21/month only because the oil and gas work in the area polluted the ground water about 30 years ago and had to switch from the old water well, cell is part of sister's family plan, my share is $35/month, internet to the house is $65/month.
So like I said in original post, couple hundred a month for groceries, couple hundred for utilities.
Homestead exemption on house/land brings annual tax down to under $500 also (oil/gas revenue pays for that essentially too, btw, under the lease for gas I could run straight off a well about 1/2 mile away like my grandparents did, free except for running the line to the house, which is already piped).

If you need 200k to live comfortably in Baton Rouge you should pray to whoever it is that you pray to that you never have to leave that shite shite Baton Rouge.

I'm in north palm beach Florida. Currently between my wife and I we make about 100-110k a year. We just found out we were having our third child ( a whoops baby if you will) to go among with our 2 and 4 year olds. We are extremely comfortable, save a bit each month for us and their college. We do however live in a relatively small 1459 sq foot house that we are rapidly outgrowing. Hard to move at the moment as our current mortgage is right at a thousand a month on a 15 year, as we bought in 2011 before kids, when the market was really low. Even though we now have 225+ in equity everything we'd want to move to is well over 500-550 down here so until my wife goes back to work more regularly we will make our current house work.
Is it ideal? Probably not for the people who need 200k to live in Baton Rouge. But we have a very comfortable life.

One of the best things about East TN is that you don't have to be setting the world on fire in order to enjoy a great quality of life.
I'm not pulling in anything crazy by any means, but I make a little north of 60k and my wife is a stay at home mom & we live comfortably. We're in a good neighborhood about 9 minutes from Downtown Knoxville and surrounded by everything that we need. I own both of my vehicles and decided to buy an older craftsman style home that had been completely renovated for a lot less than what most of my friends are spending out in the suburbs. No car payments and a very reasonable mortgage and we don't really worry about going out to eat or taking weekend getaways whenever we want. It's all about how you budget and what you're spending your money on. Knoxville has been great to my family and I. When my wife goes back to work I expect that we will make some changes, but we are very happy for the time being.

It's a great and inviting place. I'm really looking forward to this year's game and drinking with some of you guys that decide to make the trip.

I live in the Houston area, our house is paid for and we only have 1 vehicle we owe on. Realistically I don't NEED much. 50k would be the minimum to be content, though.

Johnson City is probably the best spot in upper Northeast TN. It's part of the Tri cities and has more going for it than any other city in that area imo. It's a little to small for me, but it's a beautiful place to live.
