I remember I ran around a 20 minute 3.2 mile in freshman cross country. That's not very good, but that's what I remember.

Ran cross country in high school. I ran a mile at 4:45, but wasn't really cut out for distance. My fastest 5K time was about 19:30, never really timed a 10K but probably closer to an hour at the peak of my running.

Mile - I've never run just a mile for time.
5K - 18:52 a month ago at age 40. I could beat that on a flatter course, but I'm still happy with that time.
10K - 39:38 6 years ago. I think I could beat that now, but haven't run a 10K in ages. At least raced one.

these are very realistic numbers. I absolutely don't believe there are that many people sniffing 5 minute miles. I am slow. I know I'm slow. I don't pretend that most aren't faster than me if they try at all. But I run a good bit and participate in races. There just aren't than many people throwing down lightening fast paces.
I'm 31 and am probably just as fast as I ever was (never ran besides baseball practice in high school). 7:30 mile, 24 5k, 53ish 10k, 2hr 13.1. Again, I know I'm slow, but I tend to finish toward the front of the middle third (the average folks) of finishers.

I agree with you. 90% of this thread is bullshite answers. No way that many old fat asses that post on TigerDroppings were ever running 4.5-5 minute miles.

I remember my time on the two mile run portion of my final PT test was11:54 seconds (I have no idea how or why I've remembered that since the summer of 1988). So, dividing that by half, I'd say the fastest mile I've ever run was somewhere around 5:35 give or take. I was 18 at the time.
As for 5K, I've done two of those but can't remember what my time was. I know it wasn't anything impressive.

I was a decathlete in college. Sucked at hurdles, high jump, discus and pole vault. Didn't really suck, but not good enough in those events to score well.

6:40 mile - Age 31
21:30 5K - Age 29
51:xx (can't remember) 10K - Age 31
1:57 Half - Age 32
I'm 40 now, up to 7:20 mile (last summer), 24:30 5K (last fall), 2:02 half (February). Haven't run a 10K since 2013 (?), so not real sure where that's at.

I went to basic with a Hopi Indian and that dude could run. He never broke 9 minutes on an APFT, but he was never tired. He could have gone to Stanford on a partial, but still couldn't afford it. So he joined the Army for college. Except he never got out, he's rockin 18 years in now.

If you are running road races in Louisiana, you can find small races where you can potentiall win with a 5k time anywhere between 18-21 depending on who shows up.
These guys talking about 4:14 miles as the minimum standard for a fast mile are all former collegiate runners still in their early thirties, so it is all relative.
As someone else mentioned, the true test of manhood is the beer mile.
