There are a lot of bored blue collar adjacent people on this site that think the trades are filled with Mike Rowe types. The reality is you’ll be working alongside a lot of stupid trashy people that didn’t do well in Louisiana public schools.

While on a jobsite , don't even bother asking one for help with anything if it doesn't involve welding.

I think some of them would sit on a bucket and watch a co-worker bleed out from an injury if that co-worker wasn’t welding alongside them.

Think regular welders are odd?
Hang out with some underwater welders for a while.
Brave mofos but they're all off kilter

They're known as weldurrs where I come from.

But I've known a couple who were smart and funny as hell.

I know plenty of IBEW guys making north of $60/hr just on straight time. Add in OT, per diem, any other bonuses, and you can bust your arse off for 3 months

This sounds fricking miserable tbh

Hell thats what I thought it'd be like. I started as a helper and didnt have a twic card so I got sent to a plant where it wasnt required. It was where the company sent all the hands that couldnt get them. Holy. Shite. Out of the 30 or 40 people on the project there were maybe 5 who I would consider decent people. After my second or third day I started applying to colleges.

Median income for welders in the US is $57,800, just under the Louisiana median of $62,300. That’s about $30 an hour or thereabouts. To make $150k in 6 months with everything over 8 time and half, Saturdays time and half and Sunday double time, standard in the building trades, one would need to 23.142 hours a day for 6 months without any time

We are paying them a lot more than that right now. We have to or they jump to another company.

I am employed by a large fabrication company and most of our welders make between 22-25 dollars an hour, but a lot of them are contractors who make a good bit in per diem.

That’s the nationwide average. Just because Thibodeaux is making $18 million a year working a day and half a year in the Permian doesn’t matter. That is the median salary gleaned from BLS, IRS and job postings.

“They drivin round with da Big Blue or 300D bolted to da flatbed on dat 2fiddy brah. Makin dat cheese out on da pipeline.”

All I know about welders is what my bro in law who works at a plant told me. We can’t take him anywhere nice for obvious reasons.

Again, just because Boudreaux is making $16 billion a year working 9 minutes a year in the gulf does not matter….those salaries are the median salaries as reported by employers and employees to the IRS and the BLS and recruiters and job postings. If Fotenaux is making $73 gazzillion doing one 1.5” weld a year means there hundreds of millions of welders making $.03 cents a year working 7-16s and spotted overtime. Those numbers aren’t wrong and they don’t refute the fact that some welders are indeed making a pile of money but the median welder is not. Suggesting that a young person should consider welding as a career because some welders make a pile of money is exactly the same as telling a HS kid that some linebackers in the NFL make $10 million a year therefore the kid should study playing linebacker instead of algebra. The vast majority of linebackers in the US never make a penny at it….and the median welder in the US makes the figures I posted.
