We used to always pass by a ship yard when we were out in the boat.. It would be mid day during the summer and dudes would be wearing their welding gear, long sleeves, etc and welding. I remember thinking "that's not a job for just anyone". So you have to be a little nuts to do the job.

This has nothing to do with this thread but I recently starting rewatching the animated series REFINED on YouTube and I forgot how fricking hilarious it was

I see "refined, the movie" has been popping up on YouTube. I assume it's just a compilation of previous clips.

It’s all the welding gases they’re constantly huffing
Aren’t they subjected to radiation with some types of metals?
I know a guy that has to wear a long sleeve shirt and not due to hot pieces burning his arm.

I always wait breathlessly for your entry into these threads. Such a vast amount of knowledge you share based on your work experience.
To be fair it was a pretty stupid assumption to make

I’ve noticed a few short clips that I don’t ever remember seeing before so maybe they have something in the works??

Its the hexavalent chrome in the welding fumes.
Birdseed has to put on that 1/2 mask, supplied air respirator or he's not gonna see much more travel ball

Assuredly, thats based on your years of experience working in industrial environments among tradesmen.

The last thread like this a dude overstated what PM’s were making at data centers by about 2x while I was looking at contracts and invoices for PM rates for data centers being built in several different states

We only preach the noble trades like plumbing to other peoples’ children. Welders are just people that weren’t smart enough to get a gender studies degree.

Used oil field pipe is frequently laced with norm. Low grade radioactive material but still probably not great. Galvanized pipe is toxic to breathe the fumes when youre welding.
The burns ive sustained welding are not exactly fun. Its impossible to not deal with slag bouncing off the weld and popping all over you. Im not super intelligent and I have a bunch of burnt through tennis shoes and burn marks on my toes and "holy" shirts to prove it.
If you weld in short sleeve shirts you get a killer farmer's sunburn usually on one arm.
I do it as a hobby and make money from it occasionally.
As far as welders salary im guessing it is pretty all over the place. Mobile/field welders can do really well. Shop welders that just point and shoot mig welding are on the lower end. Cant say for certain but id assume the average welder salary is made up of a lot of $25 an hour employees and a mix of $50+ hr employees and the in-between that salary is statistically lower.
