re: What's the biggest eye opener that you've had while visiting another state/country etc?

Mexico City is like that. My office had a nice shopping mall on the same block, 5 star hotels, and a Lamborghini dealership across the street. Drive just a COUPLE blocks, and it's tarps for housing and absolute slums. It's unreal.
You could live in Mexico City and think everything is normal, if you stayed in your area.

I went to Russia a few years ago for a friends wedding which coincided with the start of the World Cup.
I always had the notion that Russians are all the Red Menace and the enemy, but the Russian people themselves were great and tended to love us Americans. There were multiple instances of people telling me something along the lines of "Russian government, American government, all assholes; they are not us."
Granted, it's possible that their hospitality to foreigners was greater than usual being World Cup hosts, but my experience was that they are regular folks and not dissimilar from us.

Your average rural baw here in the US has far more in common with their fellow rural Russian baw than they do with their own urban dwelling countrymen. You'll find that's the case in almost all western nations.
When I lived in Germany, my landlord was always bitching about the assholes in the big cities fricking everything up in the country. I always felt like I was home when he'd go on a rant.

Nah. I know a couple of Russians and they are awesome.
Reality is that regular people the world over have far more in common with each other than their own leadership. I believe that's likely been true for all of mans history.

I find Russians to be very friendly.
They may not smile the way we do. But they will go out of their way to help you, in ways that seem crazy to me.
It doesn’t matter if it’s incredibly inconvenient to them. You are the guest.
They are also uncomfortable with the idea of strangers. You are a person. And they almost immediately break that distance.

Visiting the interior of Jamaica (away from the ports and resorts) and seeing what poverty actually looks like.
Think I would go with this as well, first real memory from visiting outside of the USA is from a cruise stop in Jamaica. Went somewhere in the interior and just remember the partially built cinder block homes because they just build the house as they get money to pay for the material.

Did the same at around 17 years old. We took a bus up the mountain for a zip lining excursion. Had never seen poverty like that. And that bus ride was absolutely insane. Just hauling arse around corners, horn beeping, on a 1 lane road in the jungle.

Same experience...
Likewise with the Irish.
Southern brits are dicks, northern are OK.
Parisians suck, French nice
Italians are fun
Aussies are fun
The Dutch were aloof
Germans nice
Thai are happy go lucky
Koreans outside Seoul are awesome...very much like Southern Americans in sensibilities, food, etc.
Chinese are timid

Yea, these people don’t know what they are doing. White people are extremely nice compared to other cultures. Constantly getting taken advantage of. They won’t like their replacements at all. Trust me

I had no idea the Bolsheviks were Jewish. I never knew the connection to communism with this group. I don’t remember being taught that, which is likely on purpose

Went to a wedding in Rhode Island and got into a heated discussion with a 32yr old girl about race. She talked about how racist everyone is from the south. After talking awhile she recalled her first encounter with someone who wasn't white.....AND SHE WAS 19 YEARS OLD when it happened. At that moment I realized debating with her was pointless. How do you go 19 years without ever speaking to a person who isn't white? How does this even happen?

Germany, you can get a draft beer for breakfast at a Burger King.

Auburn- how small of a town it is.
lol. To someone who grew up there, it's at least tripled in size, maybe quadrupled.
Had two nights in London a few years ago. Took the train in to Victoria Station and walked around. Saw Big Ben, Parliment, Westminster Abbey, the Thames, Trafalga Square, Buckingham Palace, #10 Downing Street, and a few other things on a quick walking tour. Also saw a Krispy Kreme kiosk in Victoria Station (not right).
What I saw very, very little of was anyone who looked English. Everyone was from the middle east, Africa, the Caribbean, or eastern Europe/Russia.

Is that literal? She had a writing pen in her hand and stabbed you with it? On purpose?

Paris & Dublin are like this, too.
ETA: in my European travels I also learned how much a hold drugs has on everyone. We got off the ferry in Dublin at 6AM and on almost every street corner were junkies coming off their highs. People were throwing up, shooting up, arguing - the people didn’t look much different than the statues of the great hunger memorial

Odd, last night I had a dream 3 teenage girls "surrounded" me as I was walking down a dark street. One of them pulled out this long pen and acted like she was going to stab me. I told her, "lady, if you even come close to me I'm going to put my fist all the way through your skull." It worked, they all walked away (quickly). So........try that next time.
