I've lived in GA, SC, LA, TX and OK and in my experience LA is by far the best. The culture is unmatched in this country. If I had to pick another it would be Oklahoma (or Texas if you don't consider OK the south).

Each southern state has something unique to offer. But for my top 3 i'd go with:

1. North Carolina
2. Georgia
3. Louisiana

You don't get a vote in this because

2. You voted for Mississippi

Going to go with my home state bias...

Virginia....

- We have Alexandria, Charlottesville, etc
- Great history from Jamestown, Williamsburg, Appomattox, Bull Run, etc
- I would put our Universities up against NC, UVa, Va Tech, JMU, Richmond, William and Mary, VMI, etc
- I think the NC beaches are better, but I would go with our Blue Ridge mountains...
- as for pro sports, we would all claim DC accross the border in DC...but are not stuck with headaches of stadiums and what not... (Redskins and Washington Caps training centers are in Northern Va)
- If you are into Nascar, we have Richmond, Martinsville, and Bristol...

I'm not from Texas, but I don't think you can have this discussion without them. I mean, they actually were a confederate state.

Is this the thread where everyone says the state they grew up in or live now is the best?

North Carolina's a nice place.
You live in a small sheltered world if you don't think NC is a southern state.

There are only two states I would not ever live in, Arkansas and Mississippi. All the other southern states have something to offer somewhere in the state for me. Personally, I think LA has the best culture (my home state) but I would choose TX for overall quality of life.

Texas hands down. You can go from swamps to pine woods to the hill country to high desert. San Antonio, Austin, Dallas, Houston etc. it's about as diverse of a state as you can get. From the big city to big bend, If you can think of it, you can find it there. The beaches suck unless you go way to the south but other than that, it's solid.
