but I consider it mid Atlantic
i can be in NC in an hour and 45 minutes from Atlanta, so i def don't think of it as mid-atlantic.
and i sort of agree with OP. From the Highlands/Cashiers/Brevard area to Asheville/Black Mtn/Hendersonville to Boone/Blowing Rock, western NC is great. I'm not crazy about the rest of it, but def good on paper.
Georgia has Athens, the good aspects of Atlanta (there are many that the outsider wouldn't know about or appreciate), mountain towns and National Forests, Savannah, and Tybee, Sapilo, Cumberland, Amelia, etc islands. And it's a 6 hour drive from Atl to very best gulf coast beaches, so that's advantage over Charlotte, Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill.
New Orleans is a very compelling reason for me to pick Louisiana though, as it is hands down my favorite city in the south, and very easy drive to good beaches and even easier for good fishing/hunting.
I guess if you're more into paddling, climbing, hiking, camping, and all that jazz, then you'd pick NC, then Ga or TN. If more into fishing and hunting and culture and actual jazz, then Louisiana.

I'm not a beach person, so I'll say Tennessee.
Memphis to the West
Nashville to the North
Chattanooga to the South
Knoxville to the East.

I've lived in GA and LA for years and spent a few months working in Tennessee. GA is the "nicest" but I love LA for all the intangibles.

Born and raised in LA, family in AL and MS. lived in: SC coast, FL panhandle, NC (five years), TN (five years), currently reside in GA.
Tennessee is number one hands down and I didn't ever live in Nashville
2nd would be GA, FL, NC in any order you like
5th LA and SC are only slightly better than MS and AL

North Carolina does pretty well for itself. I'd say their highs aren't as high as Georgia, but their lows aren't as low either.

In sure you can I just don't think of it as a southern state. However I do think it would be a great state to live in.
