My little brother is going to LSU in the fall and wants to be a Project manager or Site manager for a construction company.

He wants something to give him an edge on his resume when recruiting comes.

I told him to do Civil Engineering but he doesn't think he's capable because he made a C in Pre-Calculus lol

I imagine they got some long time construction veterans on here so I'm curious what y'all would say.

The guys who make it all the way to the top are generally mechanical.

Civil/Mechanical over CM but CM + Economics or Spanish is a great combination.

Accounting.

A PM who understands how his job costing and WIPs translate to the company’s cash flow is fantastic.

Some good class on materials methods and properties wouldn't hurt, having a good understanding of that will make one a better project manager imo. I suppose such a class may be part of a construction management program however

Tell him to get tudors and study harder. Yes calculus is hard but I firmly believe anyone who truly applies themselves can make it through.

Most of the individuals that I have met in upper management at construction companies are degreed engineers. I recommend Civil or Industrial Engineering major with a minor in Construction Management.

Industrial Engineering is basically a degree in project management.

I would recommend one of the big 4 over industrial. Electrical, Civil, Mechanical, or Chemical. For construction go mechanical or civil.

Source--Masters in Industrial

Talk to your academic advisor.

I would tell him to get an engineering degree. It has more value.

There’s not really anything taught in CM that he won’t learn on the job, more or less it’s a business degree.

Tell him to look into Farrier Science.

Admittedly I’m old school.

tell him don’t give up (if he’s interested in it) I’m a civil PE, lsu grad. For me lower level classes were actually harder. Calc II was a bitch, but ask me how much I use it now.. probably zero.

Now if he gets to physics, statics, and mechanics of materials and struggles or hates it, I’d probably dip out..
but as you progress through the curriculum you become more interested in the things you’re learning about. Get to see concrete being crushed, get to see fluids moving through a pipe..
I actually made much better grades in those upper level classes than the lower level ones.

An LSU CM Degree gives you the credits for a business administration and technical sales minor. Tbh I dont think minors matter very much anymore for getting a job so I wouldnt worry about getting any additional minors.

Also, I know PMs that dont even have college degrees. So while a higher level engineering degree would be nice, it isnt necessary. Personality and reliability go farther than any degree, and a CM degree will be enough to get a foot in the door at most companies.

He doesn't need to do any thing extra to stand out.

Get degree. Show up to work. Give a shite.

The last part will seperate him enough if he can do it.

I'm a CM grad, that hires at least 2-3 LSU guys a year for entry level positions at a big contractor. The most important thing that makes guys stand out to me is ability to interview and previous internship experience.

The guys who pick it up fast can be a PM in 3-5 yrs out of school for us.

This.

Did this at LSU too and work in construction sales now. During the interview process my now boss did mention he liked how I at least had the business minor so it can be applied to both.

This and have a positive attitude.

Temperament is free, every minute of every day it’s a choice for everyone on the planet.

Showing up, caring, a positive attitude and attention to detail.

I’ll stop there.

If he has the first and two of the three latter, he’ll be fine.

If he has all four and is reasonably competent, he’ll be the boss.
