I have 3 Australian Shepards. They are such good dogs. Loyal and attentive.

It's a boxer for us. Raised our kids with boxers in the house. We prefer females. They are smaller than males (around 50 lbs full grown) and bit more chill (I think). Very very loving, affectionate, loyal, playful and goofy. Only negative is lifespan. Can sometimes be cut short by heart issues and cancer.

Basset hound. Fun when you want fun. Lazy when you want lazy. Soft and shedding isn’t horrible. Doesn’t stink.

Catahoula. It's the state dog for a very good reason.

Do not recommend. We had a pretty “healthy” English as far as nostrils, heart and skin, but his ears were a constant problem. Vet bills outrageous. Overheated. Drool. Flung stuff from his face across the room. Don’t get me wrong, the funniest and sweetest dog. But my house was disgusting. My mom has a Frenchie and lots of problems. Always a cherry eye, skin problem, UTI.

Aussie. Fiercely loyal and loving. Protector of my, then, young children. He passed at 5 from a pulmonary embolism. Died in my arms at LSU vet school. Best dog in my life.

Border collie-never barks unless it’s a big emergency. Exceptionally smart, sweet.

Jack Russell- energetic

Jack Russell-

Best mouser I’ve ever seen. My wife’s Jack Russel would rain down a carnival of death on mice and rats when I’d clean out my hay barn. None of my other dogs could hold a candle to the efficiency and focus that little dog had at dispatching rodents.

Basset hound.

Cool dogs. Great with kids. Biggest mistake with them is trying to train them. You don't train them, they train you.

Absolutely. The saggy puppy dog eyes and droopy ears get you every time.

A mixed breed mutt that my dad called a "feist" and was the best damn squirrel dog to ever haunt the woods in Rapides Parish. Got him when I was 6 or 7 and he died when I was in the 11th grade. Not ashamed to say I cried like a baby...loved that dog and he loved me back.

Looked almost exactly like this. RIP Stealer

And they know how to use that sad look to their advantage too.
Their sense of smell is amazing. The kids would take a hot dog and let the dog smell it and then go hide it in the back yard. The dog would bolt out the back door, nose to the ground, tail straight up and the tracking game was on. And it would find it, flop its ears and it was game over and time for a nap.

Maybe because this is a heavy southern message board but Bernese Mountain Dogs are amazing especially with little kids. Absolute saints. Your toddler could spend 8 hours a day poking the dog in the eye and grabbing its ears and that dog would die for that kid.

Edit: if you live where it snows you will have to drag them inside of it’s snowing. They would rather lay in the lawn and get snowed on for hours than come into a warm house
