What’s it like being a HS football referee?

Say in Louisiana, how much do they pay? Is the pay and traveling worth it? Do you or people you know who do it enjoy it? I’m retired, oldest son done with football and youngest just plays baseball. Pretty good shape, vision sucks so I’d fit in. TIA

A coworker did it a few years back and they had secret meet up locations and were escorted to the games by the state police. I can’t imagine what it’s like now.

Very simple…
You ref a private school game, and it will be smooth sailing with the occasional arse chewing from a coach on a bad call
You ref a public school game, the team that loses will have your picture blasted on social media the next day talking about “dis mayne cheated us”. Thats if you were fortunate enough to make it to your vehicle without any confrontation with fans

I have worked with several guys that did it in different areas of Louisiana and Mississippi. They all seemed to love it. I don’t ever remember a single one of them quitting once they started.

I know a guy who does it for a living in Southern California. Football in the fall, girls volleyball in the winter. In the spring he may ref a spring scrimmage if he's in town, but mostly he travels. They have games six days a week and he often will work two games in one day.

Now let's talk about officiating HS football in Texas...those guys can make serious money from what I understand. Percentage of the gate in some cases, if not all cases, I believe.

Theres some guys here that ref on Fri nights and Saturdays (ALL DAY) for peewee leagues. Guessing they make around $250 a weekend x 4 weekends, not bad for extra cash a month.
One guy did tell me they have to arrive and leave in street clothes because one of their guys got knocked out in the parking lot

I officiated in Louisiana and have done it in a few other states.
Louisiana football was a lot of fun with bands playing and some good crowds at big games.
Now that I am getting older it keeps me sharp, staying up to date on the rules, how to enforce, etc. Now we get game video so you can see your mistakes and learn to improve. Plus you should be in decent shape to move around the field and be in the correct position to make a call.
I don’t do it for the money, I make about $2500-3000 a year working 1-2 varsity games a week and a handful of JV games. Usually put that money towards a vacation.
The associations I have worked with have been pretty good groups of guys and the retired officials still come out to our games to shoot the s-.
You need thick skin but that’s part of the challenge when the game gets tight you get to challenge yourself to be in position to make the correct call.

I know a guy that did it. He enjoyed it somewhat, but he always told me the coaches were pricks. One would call him a racist if he didn't make a call while another would call him a racist if he did make a call.
He'd always tell them "Sorry coach - I only passed my test last week. I'm just happy to be here."

Its a lot of fun, keeps you active, keeps you around the game. The money is a nice bonus but nobody is earning a living being an official I can promise you. If you are in decent shape and are willing to learn you will do great.
Dealing with the Coaches and fans is nothing really. I personally stick to sanctioned games. I don't do pee wee or any of that. When the coaches are representing a school even the small public schools there is at least a basic understood level of professionalism with actual consequences is shite goes left. AAU/Pee Wee all that stuff is a free for all. No thanks
Last thing, I do it because I enjoy it. I said if it stops being fun Im out.
