In one region of America, after the time period we're talking about. I think you're wrong about the labor situation in early 19th century America.

You mean if we had to find and pay workers to do everything from building roads and railways to farming and production?

No.

Amazing that they went in and set up an extremely similar system to what they left in the American South. Although they believed in racial equality (and therefore, no slavery), the Americo-Liberians dominated Liberian politics in, more or less, a caste system, vestiges of which survive to this day.

Well, Europeans didn't introduce the concept of slavery to Africa.

They did however introduce the concept of the wheel to parts of Africa. And domesticated animals.

Sure Chinese people built early America.

You really think they were treated better than a slave?

All they were was just another for of slave class at that time.

Great, you're one of THOSE morons.

Considering the Confederate States were funded by the Central Banks of Europe which were trying to destabilize the American landscape in order to get a Central Bank founded in the United States (which Lincoln was firmly against), then yes, I stand by my assertion that the Civil War wasn't about slavery.

If by "moron" you mean very educated then I will certainly agree with you.

The throwing events are dominated by white guys, and if you take away the slave descendants, all you really have are the dominant distance runners of east Africa.

Jimmy the Greek may have been blackballed, but he had a point. Selective breeding has led to the modern North American athlete we see today.

Very good point. The exploitation of labor wasn't limited to slavery, although that was by far the most egregious form of labor exploitation.

I did not know John D. Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, Henry Ford and J.P. Morgan owned slaves.

You think that paying an Irishman a pittance (half of what they'll drink away anyhow) would be more expensive than housing, clothing, feeding, training and keeping healthy slaves?

In America we had chattel slavery. Families. They were a finite resource and valuable property. An investment. Now in South America and the Caribbean they were a dime a dozen, worked to death because they were primarily male and abundant.

But in America...it was different.

There's a reason Irish Canal in New Orleans is called Irish Canal. The Irish that died building in were worthless and replaceable. You wouldn't sacrifice a slave for that. Slaves had value.

?

Modern meaning American sports? I know most of these don't translate into the Olympic games.

Slaves built the wall that Wall Street was named after in the 1600s when it was still called New Amsterdam. I don't think the Ayn Rand's heros emerged in a vacuum.

The vast majority of winners of the 100, 200, 400, relays and jumps are athletes from North America. Well over 90%.

I assume you take issue with this thread, because if you don't then I must question your inability to move beyond a simple message board username.

If seeing a username spurns you to e-rage you may want to seek a therapist as soon as possible.

Or, you can join a thread that actually has substance and good debate.

Your call, brotha!

George Washington, James Maddison, Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, any of them ring a bell?
