When I worked for the government, I traveled overseas back when the US dollar was very strong. I completed my expense reports showing the local currency amounts to correspond to my receipts and then converted the sums to US dollars in accordance with federal policies. They promptly sent me a check in dollars for the amounts on my receipts. Many, many times the amount of the report. I emailed the accountants and explained their mistake. They sent me a second check for the wrong amount again. I emailed them and they basically called me stupid and told me I was the one doing it wrong. I documented the whole thing and went to my supervisor who said "screw them, cash it." The government never came looking for the huge overpayment. Long story short, GS-3 clerks waste taxpayers money like an OT Baller at a Vegas strip club.

Something similar happened to me. I was getting overpaid by 21 dollars or something every check. Which I didn't notice because it was happening since I had first started. Well hr sent me an email telling me I had been overpaid so much and would have to pay it back. By that they meant it would be deducted entirely from my next check. It kind of hurt, but luckily it hadn't gone on for too long. It was 20 something pay periods.

You have to know they would have discovered it eventually. Too many accounting double-checks. At year-end, or quarterly, the salary budget for her section would be too large. Are you really this naïve?
It is illegal to keep something you know is not yours.
At a minimum, she would be fired. She could have had charges filed against her.

I was interrogated when some money went missing in a computer system.
I never had direct access to money, I just crunched ones and zeros.
It was something like $12,000 missing.
I finally got fed up and told them that I would never risk going to jail for $12,000. I said if a million dollars was missing, then I should be the first person they interrogate.
They never interviewed me again about missing money.
I guess a million dollars never went missing.....

I hope my company doesn't "test" me by overpaying me 2 grand. I rarely pay attention to the amount deposited to my account every pay period. I may look back over a course of a few months from time to time, but if they do this, then come to me a week or so later wondering why I did not notify them of their "error", then fire me, I will be not the happy camper,nor would they.

we have direct deposit but there are occasional errors, in both directions, it's usually made up in the next pay period, my company did make a mistake a few years ago and put my entire check into my 401k by accident
