We had a good employee that was overpaid $3000 in expense reimbursements. He pocketed the money and didn't say anything. We caught it in the next month or two and when confronted the guy said he made a bad decision and didn't report it. We fired him on the spot.

As soon as you know that you are taking something that doesn't belong to you it becomes theft. Also, these sorts of things are audited and reconciled periodically.

I was owed $1300 by a well known national company. When I received the check in the mail it was for $13,000.

Oh frick off. Your wife sounds like the millennial. My mother would not have hesitated to notify them of their error. Not run back to her office and call my dad like she's a freshmen in high school and ask him what to do.
