nope still Whitney. Whitney inventing the cotton gin was reasponsible for the massive increase in profittablitly of the plantation economy. According to wikipedia (too lazy to lookup other sources) there was a huge increase in imported slaves from 1801-1810. The cotton gin was invented in 1793 and that leas to the massive import of slaves.
If Whitney had not invented the cotton gin slavery would have died off around 1820-1840 and the African American population would be much smaller than it is today. So Whitney is more directly responsible for the current makeup of America and slavery's impact on America.

I'm completely aware of all of the things that you've posted. My point is no Rolfe, no Whitney. 1588 also has to be thrown into the equation. If not for England's defeat of the Spanish Armada, I believe that Spanish power in the New World would have continued to expand. After the gold dried up, Spanish colonies developed successful slave labor driven agriculture themselves, and I believe that an interest in expansion north would have returned.

Let me take this into a variation on the theme...what if Eli Whitney had invented a horse-drawn cotton picking machine at the same time he invented the cotton gin?

After reading through most of the comments (many well thought and well said), maybe we should ask "what this country would look like if the slaves had been deported to Africa after the Civil War? This was actually tried - there was a group, whose name escapes me, that started sending free blacks back to Africa in the early 1800's.
What is oddly interesting, is that the movement lost momentum during Reconstruction due to strong opposition from former slaves.

Africa. Once gold was found, there would have been claims to each mountain range. The NE would basically be South Africa, with various countries fighting over the rest. Alaska would still be owned by Russia. You can lump Canada in there as well. No way they maintain control of that amount of land without us being neighbors.

1. If Rolfe had not cultivated tobacco another settler would have. The invention of the cotton gin was a much more complicated and lead to an expansion of slavery in the USA than tobacco.
2. The gold was not going to dry up in the timeframe of the colonial period in America. With their mining capabilities the mines would probably still be producing.

The Spanish or the French had no desire for the colonial economy tht England had. I doubt that would have changed. They wanted gold and gold only.

You are thinking of the ACS American colonization society. In the early 19th century, many could see the writing on the wall and knew that slavery would one day end. This society posed a question: What to do with free slaves?
Liberia was founded as a colony to send free slaves.
