At work nursing a hangover from Monday Night Football card night the night before
Pretty sure I heard a story about a guy who worked in the WTC (can’t remember which tower) who was late to work because he overslept after staying up late to watch MNF. His floor was hit and he would have died if he hadn’t been late that day.

What did you think was going to happen afterwards?
Well. It was pretty up in the air afterwards because it wasn’t 100% known who actually masterminded the plot. Was it a nation (Iran, Russia, Iraq)? Was it terrorists?
The government hunkered down and hardened any potential targets and was basically ready to counterattack anything the looked like a threat. They were looking for the culprits, but didn’t announce it officially immediately.
For those few days, it was very frustrating not to have an enemy to lay it on.
At the time, Al-Qaeda wasn’t well known. The prior list of suspects ranged from Hezbollah, Hamas, the PLO, you name it. It took time to understand what Al-Qaeda was up to all those years in Afghanistan.
I think it took about 3~4 days, but soon Osama Bin Laden was a household name and we started piecing together the who, hows and whys of it all.
Even then, it was still many months before Bush announced our “response” (i.e. bomb the shite out of Afghanistan) on St Patrick’s Day 2002.
I bought a newspaper on Sept 12th. I still have it to remember the chaos those bastards brought on our great country.

Overslept and missed an interview in downtown Manhattan that morning. I would not of been in any danger but I probably would have run towards the towers just to witness it. I’m kind of wired that way. I had my confirmation for the interview on September 10 saved for posterity but yahoo lost all my emails several years later.

Bush wrote in his diary that night that they thought it was Bin Laden. They knew pretty much when it happened who it was.
Al Qeada wasn’t a household name to every American in 2001 but Bin Laden was after the embassy and USS Cole bombings in 1998 and 2000.

I was taking the ASVAB test in my high school cafeteria. Noticed the administering men/women becoming antsy, finished and returned to class. The class was silent when I returned and there was a radio broadcasting the news on a chair at the front of the room.
He asked about 9/11, not Pearl Harbor.

Was a junior in highschool. We were in assembly when the principal made the announcement. At the time I didn't understand the situation entirely, until I had heard the 2nd tower was hit and saw video.
That's how it was for me too.
It happened during 2nd period. Someone came to our class and said to turn on the TV because a plane just flew into the WTC. Our teacher never took his chalk off the board and taught through the period. Class let out and people were going nuts in the hallways. Got to 3rd period and still hadn't seen any video. Principal comes on the PA and says two planes have flown into the WTC towers, both have collapsed, and a plane has flown into the Pentagon and it has collapsed. The entire time I though it was some kind of tourist prop plane that hit the building by mistake. Hearing that announcement blew my mind. We said a prayer as a school and then watched coverage the rest of the day. I'll never forget it, like all of you.

Right. Those who were experts in the terrorism area had a likely suspect. But it was not 100% confirmed.
I also remember, days after 9/11, the news reports coming out about Bin Laden telling people to turn on the radio and get ready for some big news coming out of America. And they pieced together that Mohamed Atta had been with Bin Laden.
But on 9/12/2001, there was not enough solid information to direct a response. Just several days of live broadcasts from Ground Zero and Washington.

Freshman year of HS, "sports officiation" class. They made us go to our homerooms (based on alphabetical sorting) and watch the TV. Within 15 minutes of the first tower falling, my mother checked me out of school. Pretty sure I continued watching for an hour or so then played PS2.

Ari Fleischer @AriFleischer As I do every year, tomorrow I will live-tweet my memories of what happened seventeen years ago, on September 11, 2001. I hope everyone will remember and say a prayer for those who were killed and for their families. Time passes by, but what took place must never be forgotten.

Another thing that happened on 9/11 was many phones networks up North were overloaded due to the call volume. People couldn’t place local calls to loved ones. But for some reason, long distance calls were getting through.
I spent part of the morning calling family in Manhattan and Queens and relaying to them that their kids were safe. My elder cousins were going to a doctor’s appointment when I called. I told ‘em, they might want to cancel it and stay home instead.

7th grade algebra. I had just left football practice, walked into algebra class, and the teacher was crying. We had no idea why until she explained to us what was going on
That's quite the junior high football program to be practicing in the morning.
