Swam 3.1 miles in the Atlantic Ocean open water 5k national championships when I was 16… couldn’t see the bottom for an hour. … I was trying to get out of that water as fast as I could

Is it common to see the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean when swimming 3 miles?

I had a similar experience in the quarter late one night. One of my oldest friends was getting married the next day, so the wedding party decided to go bar-hopping on Bourbon the night before. When it was getting around 1:00am, something started seeming off. I could see what appeared to be multiple individuals in pajama pants and white t-shirts starting walking South from Rampart to filter in with the crowd. They weren’t in a group, but one at a time passing every minute or two while we waited for an uber that never seemed to be coming. I turned to my date and said “we need to get out of here NOW” and started walking to our hotel in the CBD instead. I found out on the news the next day that there was a big shoot out on Bourbon street, lots of injured bystanders, just minutes after we made it back to the hotel.
If a situation feels unsafe, it probably is.

Pulled into a gas station on Elvis Presley road in Memphis 20-30 years back. As we stopped at the gas pumps, a black lady came running out waving her arms, crying, "Get out. The are robbing the place." She never slowed down, leaving her car and running down the street.
I looked across the lot and saw a guy with a gun pointed at clerk behind the cash register. I quickly pulled away. I have seen people get shot and didn't want to see it again. We turned down the side of the building and the wife, looking across the lot, began to shout. "Oh no, there are children!" I looked over to see three kids on bikes coming toward the building. I rolled down my window and shouted, "Get away. The place is being robbed." They must have been from the neighborhood, because they quickly turned away and boogied across the lot of the shopping center behind the Station.
About that time, the 2 robbers came running past where the kids were, with their guns still in their hands. They went down a few cars and got in their car and drove away. After sitting a minute or two, I decided I needed to go look at another dead person and backed up toward the front of the station.
The clerk was ok, and we called the cops, who didn't seem all that concerned.
Glad I didn't walk in on the robbery.

FIL hit me with a joke the other day:
(In talking about going into Nola for work)
“Yeah, I started keeping a gun in my car. That way if I break down in New Orleans East I can just shoot myself.”

Years ago some friends were able to use a very nice apartment in the French quarter. They asked us to drive down and stay with them. We were young with no social media. When we got there, we were right in the middle of The Bayou Classic and our car was surrounded with pedestrians. Couldn't move. It took a long time to get to our parking spot in quarter. We didn't know anything about BC and neither did our friends. ??

When Las Vegas moved their New Year's celebration from Fremont street to The Strip.
Some idiot whipped out a gun and everybody scattered.

About 2 years after Katrina breaking down on Louisiana and Claiborne after midnight. Waving off a half dozen people trying to "Help me" with a 9 in my hand. Luckily I had a passenger. A friend about 10 minutes away came to scoop us up.

When I saw the water approaching my property from several directions even though long time neighbors insisted it wouldn't be getting any worse. Almost waited too long but I got the family out. Drove through water I should NOT have driven through and it was the most terrified I've ever been in my life as my family sat in the SUV silently while I drove and navigated where I knew the streets SHOULD be. My neighbors were rescued from their attics the next morning.

Went to a baseball game at UH. Game ended late in the evening. When leaving, we were driving down the street to get to the freeway and a group of people were just standing on their front porch. Then, when seeing us coming, they got off their porch and started walking into the middle of the road. Went fuuuuuuuuck this and just turned on the next street available and got on the freeway going the wrong way
Some of the surrounding areas of UH are pretty rough. If you head into the stadium / out of the stadium area on the wrong sides you wind up in some v rough neighborhoods. Waze / GoogleMaps will often route you through them lol
