What was it with the late-90s thru early-00s with the trashy tv shows?

Just watched an episode of Cheaters, and I gotta tell you, it’s great tv.
The people involved are exactly the type of people you would expect.
This is basically the synopsis of one of the episodes I just watched:
A guy got caught cheating on his fat wife with his even fatter girlfriend at a rodeo. His best defense was “you brought this to the rodeo?” Like it’s sacred ground. And the host is just fanning the flames.
Excellent tv.
What was it about that particular time in American history that produced shows like Jerry, Maury, Cheaters, etc?

It was a trashy time, as proven by how titillated the nation was watching the Monica lewinsky story unfold.

Does anyone remember the name of the show where different groups of ex special forces guys and swat guys would compete in mission challenges?

Serious answer - there was a prole shift in American culture in the 20th century.
Western cultures also largely abandoned beauty as an ethos in art by the middle of the 20th. Art Deco was the last gasp. Instead artists looked to provoke viewers, rather than inspire them with beauty.
And beauty should be interpreted broadly. Because it was not just beauty in form, but beauty in thought and action.
This was part of a broader assault on tradition.

That show was entertaining at times. That original host dude would sometimes find himself trying to legitimize the trashiest of relationships to make his client look noble.

I agree, but it’s still great television

My buddy used to bang this trashy girl in HS that was on Jerry Springer. I don't remember what for anymore. I used to drop him off at her trailer occasionally. My trashy story of the day

There was a 30 minute show called, Change of Heart, that I thought was pretty entertaining.
Host: Chris Jagger.

Cheap tv shows to produce. Other than the host there is very little overhead. No actors, sets, major studios, and so on.
Plus it's like a car wreck. You have to slow down and look.

I reject your original premise.
The late ‘70s and into the ‘80s were wonderful.

Early 2000s fashion was the last stand for baggy clothing and frosted tips.
