This week is anniversary a close friend's son committed suicide several years ago. What can I do for her? She's helped me a lot over the years. Card? Something else? Nothing? Thanks.

Make a donation to a charity in the son's name.

“Nothing” was your worst choice.

At least a “thinking about you” card.

I’ll echo the just showing you care sentiment. Trying to pretend like you know some situations like this when you don’t probably does more harm than good in the long term.

Is she religious? Catholic? If so a novena is a nice gift for someone dealing with the loss of a loved one.

If she’s agnostic, get her a dog.

Yes, you can always give a PIIHB reply, but in this situation you’ll deservedly get called a jackass.

My mom did something for a friend of mine who died from overdose. She bought his parents a nice house plant. It’s nothing over the top but it’s less temporary than flowers, something that can remind them of their son or that someone is thinking about them and they’re not alone.

A nice card with a memory would be nice too I’d think.

A simple gesture like this is appropriate, particularly if she lost her son several years ago.

She knows what week it is, so just making yourself available to chat will be appreciated.

Sorry to hear this man and will be praying. My bud just lost his 26 year old wife this week to suicide and we almost lost our daughter a few years ago from this epidemic. I don’t pretend to understand it all. All I know to do is spend time with those affected and show some compassion. We asked my buddy to come stay at our house this week so he wouldn’t be all alone while he works through this terrible time in his life.

Be around. Visit with them for coffee. Let them know you are thinking of their son.

I lost mine a few years ago. His birthday was last week. A few of his old friends and a couple of our friends contacted us during the week. It was so nice to talk with them about our son. Helped us tremendously and was much appreciated.

The one thing you want (more than anything) when you lose a child is for someone to talk about him/her. Just knowing he/she is not forgotten brings us much happiness.

Absolutely. But you'll get called out on it. This isn't your father's OT.

Absolutely nothing that has anything to do with that action. Continue to support daily and be a good friend.

That's tough. I would imagine you don't want to do something that is too much for a situation like that. I don't know about a card.. That seems like something that would intensify what she is feeling.

Just be around, offer to bring them somewhere so they will have someone to spend the day with and talk about it if they want to?
