Business etiquette. Would've been nice to learn about how to put together a business letter or resume.

To be honest, there are things that can't be taught. Leadership and creativity come to mind. Either you have it, or you don't.

It's amazing that money management are such a huge and important part of our lives and absolutely zero is taught in school. Imagine the savings on the back end (welfare, bankruptcy, bail outs) could be saved with an investment on the front end in education.

Typing needs to be taught early in elementary school and become an inherent part of schoolwork and assignments.

There needs to be a continuing course on research. Not just for reports/essays, but for life. We have so much information at our fingertips now that there really isn't much of a need for individual courses devoted to specific trades/vocations like some of the ones named here. But a figure-it-out-for-yourself course, required at least once every two-three grade levels. Teach them how to find shite. Teach them how to delineate good sources from bad, give them challenges they can figure out by using these newfound basic skills.

I agree that money management should be a standalone course, though.

Agree. I would add in the mix Student Loans, college vs. entering the workforce, and career planning.

I wish Vocational was a larger part in schools. It was weeded out because it was "racist". But people should have the skills, and could save thousands of dollars, if they had basic skills in auto mechanics, plumbing and electrical (not to mention those are jobs they could have without college).

I would love to see all of the things discussed in this thread taught. Unfortunately, too many of our kids are illiterate and can barely do simple Math. We spend so much time remediation that we simply run out of time to be able to teach other subjects.

Parents and communities need to put a premium on education or children will never be successful. Personally, I blame welfare. It creates generational poverty. Why learn when you can have a house, food, cable, phone, and new shoes?

It's a damn shame.

Probably the most agreeable post I've ever seen imo. In regards to math, it's surprising to know how many people have to take remedial math in college, before getting to math classes that count on your course program.

I agree. I know several blue collar who pull in 100gs and barely finished HS. There's a plumber that lives in my neighborhood who built a $300,000 camp in Grand Isle. Working a job can earn you a nice living if you get after it, you don't have to go to college to be rich. It does help though.

Exactly. I went to college and earned a good degree and make a good living. However, if I could be making the same $65k and have started working it five years earlier, that would be much worth it. Getting that head start to begin investing is HUGE. If I could go back and do it, again, I wish this was more done in public schools.

Man, I almost put this one, too. I truly believe poor parenting is the root of many undesirable things in the world today. Yeah you right...
