I was just telling someone last week, I don’t think I’ve ever been in the dining room

The only time I have is when someone had a birthday dinner or something like that.

But I can see OP being pissed that it became more of a sports bar/restaurant over the years, especially if he's been going for a while.

I'm sure in the long run ownership feels they'll make more money this way, but time will tell. Some people will be turned off, like me, but I'm an old soul.

Simple fix is I take it out of the rotation when I'm in town.

The real Don's is downtown. Don't go to that "hut" place.

Love Don's. Not 5-star Michelin, but plenty good enough. We always see people we know, lots of regulars, and that should say alot. Blueboy, I've seen your pop in there many times, always in a dinner jacket.

The bar upgrade has been a huge plus, keeping a youngish and lively crowd coming in.

Between the lively bar and quieter dining rooms, there is something for everyone in there.

The one on vets in metaire was pretty bad when I went a few months back. I remember that place being a legit fried seafood option a few years after katrina when there weren't many places like that open in New Orleans proper.

We went to the one in Metairie a few months ago. I ordered a bowl of gumbo. It comes out. I take a bite, and taste plastic. A rather large chunk of a plastic / ziplock type bag was in my bowl of gumbo.

The manager - I'll give him credit - was mortified and ended up comping our entire meal plus throwing in dessert.

But the rest of the meal was blah. The seafood platter was bland and the dessert - bread pudding - was meh.

Used to eat there with grandma and great grandma when I was a kid. Still remember that baby blue carpet, the coloring sheet, and the awesome crab fingers.
Went back a couple months ago while in town and they still have the same fish on the walls.
Little Donnie is a good dude too.

The bar over at Cafe Vermillionville no longer possesses the wealth of local knowledge that it used to, I guess. Plus, the food isn't as good as it used to be.

Went in May and had about the worst crawfish I've ever tasted. Guessing they boil them in dishwater

Food quality was good tonight. It just wasn't a pleasant experience in the dining room.

The booths off the bar (to the right as you come in) are pretty good. It’s quieter and a pretty good place to talk.

You could always hit up Dons Downtown.

Only time we go is if the inlaws are paying and that’s where they want to go. Have a couple old fashions, and suffer through.

Not sure exactly how it was years ago, but from the way you described it they definitely upgraded it.

It’s definitely better than don’s downtown whose food almost tastes like it was heated in a microwave

When I moved to Lake Charles and was dating my wife while she still lived in BR we would meet at Don's most Sunday's for dinner because it was one of the few non-chain places open on Sunday's in Lafayette. I've always enjoyed it for what it is, even thought I think it is slightly overpriced.
