re: What the begininnging (end?) of the Great Wall of China looks like

Having been all over China, I've seen parts of the Wall that are big(what you think of near tourist areas) and parts you can jump over.

The Wall in the mountains was most impressive to me.

China didn't have consistent central rule until recently. Even today, Beijing doesn't dominate every region the way Mao would have liked. In between, warlords dominated different areas, which would explain those oddly placed walls in different places.

Bigger lesson is that, ultimately, the walls didn't really work in terms of maintaining two distinct cultures/political states, but what did work was China's ability to "Sino-size" the invaders. In essence, the Mongols who stayed became "Chinese" instead of changing the Chinese (and defining that is a whole other issue) into Mongols.
