I control my A/C from my phone, and it’s on a schedule. At home, Away, and Night time temps are preset.

My house stays at the temp I have it set at throughout the day, as I have a decent thermostat and properly functioning system.

You don’t turn off your ac completely during the day. I turn mine up to 77 so I come home to 77 and it doesn’t have to work so hard to cool down.

Keeping the AC on 77 or 78 during the day keeps the house at a manageable temp so it doesn’t have to work as hard to bring it back down to 72 in the evening. That usually results in a lower bill for me.

this is the real question, it costs more money to cool it down from 85 than it does to just raise it a little bit to a reasonable temperature

No. What you need to do is set your damned thermostat and leave it alone. What the hell were you thinking turning off your AC in this type of heat?!?

I have no idea, because I would never turn off my AC. Who the hell wants to get hit in the face with 85 degree air when they walk through the door?

Around the same. We leave the AC at 78 while not home. Come home it gets turned down to 73.

Is this a fact or just an urban legend? I hear this talking point but I’ve never seen an analysis that says this definitively.

it's a fact, also humidity levels inside the house in the south without any air movement all day shoot up bigly, it's not good for your house to not have any movement

about guarantee its an urban legend. Heat transefer is going to happen at a more rapid rate when your home is at 78 and the outside is at 95 than when your home is at 85 and the outside is 95. It might feel like you're saving money but your really not. Leave it on for comfort, not savings.

Also, none of you fuchs have ansered my question. Half of you cant even read the OP correctly.

Generally I've found anything more than an 8 degree temp difference and your AC is working too hard to get the temp back down which uses more energy.

Our house has high ceilings and good ceiling fans, so we can keep it at 75/76 when we're home and it feels great. So we set the daytime temp at 82, with it back at 75 when we are home after 5:30.
