Add Warrenton, Front Royal and south and I agree. The only thing about Virginia that isn’t south is northern Virginia and parts of the Tidewater area.

Texas is too big and diverse. East texas, Dallas, Houston, etc are definitely southern

Can't say the same for San Antonio or El Paso

Texas is more of the South’s gay brother, who has a lot of money.

Virginia is an interesting state. Look at a county electoral map and it looks 90% red/rural/southern/hunting/fishing/South, but vote wise they have turned because of the massive population of blue/progressive transplants in Fairfax County and other counties close to D.C.

I'm not going to say "land doesnt vote" because that's not relevant. And land plays a factor in economics.

What matters is WHERE IS THE MAJORITY OF YOUR POPULATION and WHERE IS THE MAJORITY OF YOUR MIDDLE CLASS JOBS.

Those two factors paint the picture on how voters behave.

When I lived in the Midwest, I encountered more flying rebel flags and hardcore rednecks in Ohio, Indiana and parts of Michigan than I ever have living in Tennessee or traveling across the southeast, FWIW

Redneck doesn't exclusively mean southern. There are a LOT of farmers in the midwest.

Seems like the historical boundaries of what is considered southern and what is considered today to be southern is different.

I don't think you can define it by state lines anymore because northern people have been moving south and the populations are getting mixed. For example, here in Florida they like to say "The further south you go the further north you get".

There are even good ol baws in the Southern most parts of Maryland - St Mary’s and Calvert County. Anyone who’s spent time there knows what I’m talking about. Lots of BBQ, Baptist Churches, hunting/fishing, confederate flags, people have accents, etc. It’s a lot like the rural areas of Virginia that have been discussed in this thread. I definitely wouldn’t call the entire state of Maryland southern but for those who haven’t been, y’all would be surprised about the culture in Southern Maryland. It’s completely opposite to DC and Baltimore.

The thing about Kentucky is that people talk about it like it has become more northern over time...it hasn’t really changed much at all, it’s just always had way more of a toothless Appalachian feel than a southern feel.

No and never has.

"The South" consists of:

GA
AL
SC
NC
MS
LA
AR
TN
KY

virginia is a tricky one. I know about historical significance but you can consider is a "southern state" if you want without it being "The South". FL and TX definitely aren't it.

You don’t think Texas was more Mexican in 1862?

People just need to realize that there’s a difference between South and Deep South, and don’t be so quick to dismiss a state as northern simply because it isn’t south of I-10.

I can get on board with that too. i mentioned the state above that I'd refer to as "the south" but I think that really only GA/AL/MS/SC would be called the deep south.

Southern Ohio is like that. I have worked in Cincinnati many times and as far as I'm concerned it is very much like a southern city.
