Imagine a line that runs through about Dallas, TX on the west side and Richmond, VA on the east. Then go from a line running through Louisville, KY on the north end to about Ocala, FL on the south end. Right in there is the south, maybe not everywhere, but you’ll know it when you see it. The fried chicken and the BBQ may be a little bit different, some of it may like basketball, some of it grows cotton, and some of it doesn’t necessarily like grits and greens - but it’s there. That’s where the south is.

North Carolina is an interesting mix. Tons of transplants in the triangle, Charlotte, and Asheville while also having some traditional southern country club sweet tea on the porch types. Some of the rural parts of the state are hard redneck culture a la East Texas. Then you have the mountain folk who tend to be Democrat voting pro union types while also being hillbillies. Finally there's the coastal region which is a whole other thing.

Overall none of it reminds of the hard south (LA, MS, AL). I think it's the absence of overwhelming widespread poverty, crime, and decay. However the economic vitality has come at the cost of some of the southern charm which is a trade I will make.

North Carolina is just like the rest of the south - it’s a little bit different. I never can get used to BBQ and fried chicken together with hush puppies. They also love them some damn chili slaw dogs with red weenies and Cheerwine. Racing and basketball are much bigger than football. The coast is pretty different and eastern NC and western NC are like different worlds. But in a room in Chicago or NY, I’ve got more in common with somebody from Greensboro, Asheville, Raleigh, or Scotland Neck than I do with somebody from Missouri or Wisconsin. Probably more than someone from Kentucky or Texas too.

That’s the thing about the south - it isn’t the same from end to end and you can’t throw a blanket over it. Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Minnesota, Nebraska, and most of Missouri, Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, North Dakota, and South Dakota are the same damn thing in slightly better or worse forms with more or less snow. There’s some homogeneity in the south. But only a little bit.

Go hang out in Bogalusa (not a coastal liberal enclave) for a week and report back your findings.

true.

bogalusa is an example of what a place run by liberals and unions turns into. it's EXACTLY what any liberal rustbelt town with a large black population looks like.

shithole, made by the dnc and the aflcio.
