Would skinning and gutting a deer during deer season count as a biology educational experience? My Dad used to always pull me out a day or two (here and there) during deer season when I was younger. I'll remember those days the rest of my life.

Way more than dissecting an earthworm.

I absolutely would for a funeral, as long as it was a close relative or something like that...

Otherwise, I think it really sends the wrong message to the kid to do it very often at all. Honestly, I have seen a number of folks fail out of school and get fired from work simply because they don't have the discipline to get up and go to class or work on time and I certainly would want it to be clear to my child how important it is not to do that.

ETA: one or two isolated instances would not be a problem as long as I knew there was not a test or something like that...

I've taken my kids out of school to bring them to Jazz Fest.

They've also missed for vacations, hunting trips and sports.

If it's only a day or half of day and there's no missing a test or anything important, plus the teacher knows, I don't see a problem with it.

Both of my kids are kids are great students and I'd be all for them missing a a few days for a trip or what not. However, my wife is not having that. We will never take a vacation during school time.

We have played hookie as a family a couple times though.

A student in high school left because their parents sailed the world. That's neat! That's a reason!

That rote indoctrination, repitition and regurgitation in an antiquated and outdated setting is more important than getting out and having valuable, real world experiences?

I would excuse it without hesitation. Things like Jazz Fest I would approve as well.

I skipped school plenty of times to go fishing with my Dad. I was always one of the top performers in my class so it's not like skipping a day every now and then did any harm.

About once a month I check one of my kids out for either a doctors appt, orthopedic appt, etc.

All this = LET'S GO GET LUNCH.

Good to spend some one on one time with each kid.

Teaches make lesson plans way in advance. As long as the child is able to keep up with assignments and it does not hurt their grades,I don't see the issue.

I'm not saying it would be a whole week. Could be a day, or two or three.

And why couldn't the teacher just email the work home?

My ex1 did this last year with my older kids. Took them out of school for a week for Disney. Planned ahead and teacher was cool with it. My gf said that was normal from her experience (k-12 at Catholic school). I had never seen that shite in my public schools. Anyhoots. Oldest was top student in class that year (as every year) and son had all A's with a B in Conduct. Not sure where he gets that from.

Tldr I don't like it but it's not as uncommon nor disruptive as I thought.

That's the top reason Little 1999 didn't do regular pre K this year. Evidently bc the state receives funding for pre K, truancy laws dictate the parents can get in trouble if they miss more than X days. F that noise. It's possibly his last year before entering "the system." If we want to pack up the car & drive to Louisiana for two or three wks to visit family that probably won't be here in ten years, we're doing it.

How did that go the first time you realized that? Seems like it would be a pretty shitty situation.

I used to go backpacking with my dad in Colorado, or Wyoming. One year I missed the first 3 days of school. It was a new school so it was really strange coming in after a few days.

Only one teacher, my math teacher Mr. Dozer, gave me a hard time. "You shouldn't be missing school for vacations. The first few days are very important"

Screw that guy, I got an A in that class I think.
