In reality Bryson City, NC or Waynesville, NC are more Mayberry like than Mt. Airy.
Brevard, NC.

Need a town of about 2000 with local businesses and few chain businesses.

Granville, TN. Jackson County. The town pays tribute to Mayberry and is set up very similar. Pretty cool.

Several towns in Northeast Mississippi are like that. You'll find similar towns across the south that were based on railroad stops that all have that Mayberry feel.

70% of Mayberry in 2022 would be on their mobility scooter and have "the sugars"

I'd say Lynchburg, TN is closer to Mayberry. Winchester is a nice small town though. Helps when you have Tims Ford Lake and just a short drive to Monteagle.

Real answer: there's too much meth in the rural south for a Mayberry to exist.

Wait… are biker gangs really a problem? I had no idea, the problem in Louisiana was always black and Mexican gangs. Not really Mexicans though. I just needed a buffer to say it.
