re: What small town in the south is the most Mayberry-like place?Posted by Globetrotter747 on 9/21/22 at 5:54 am to Papoo63
Monroeville, AL.
Small town in SW Alabama. Harper Lee, who wrote To Kill A Mockingbird, is from there. Lots of tributes to the novel around town and locals put on a play in the spring. It has a private school that’s never had a black student.
I don’t know if it qualifies as “Mayberry,” but it’s far more 1960s southern than most places.

Cottonport
Ever been there for real? Place is literally like that movie the hills have eyes. Hairs on the back of your neck stand up when you drive through the old “downtown” part of it off the highway.
Edit - actually I’m thinking about Simmesport. Dont know anything about cottonport maybe it’s nice.

Can confirm, spent some time in the area working awhile back.
Still a Confederate flag flying at the courthouse
You right, time stands still, that flag is flying in front of the court house to this day. The small plot it is on is supposedly privately owned.

In Texas the towns would be:
Brenham, New Braunfels, Lindale, Decatur, Montgomery, Newton and Longview.

Maybe a bit southwest but Mertzon, Texas, just west of San Angelo is just like Mayberry as far as the people and the Courthouse .

We only spent a couple of hours there this summer but Wytheviile, VA seemed pretty quaint. Maybe someone who is more familiar with it can confirm or deny.
