I generally buy a few of those things from home depot...install them when the temps drop below about 30 and leave them on until the danger of freezing is done in the spring.

it only takes one spigot to burst and you will never skip doing that shite again.

Ah, right.. You're under the assumption all homes are created equal. If you don't reside in a hard freeze area, it's probably a good idea if temps get abnormally low for the area. But hey, they aren't my faucets.

I've lived in many different places. I've never done this. Can you present any actual facts that support your efforts? A link would be awesome. I don't give a shite what knowledge has been passed down from your Alabama family.

I have freeze proof hose bib. It ejects all the water in the exposed part of the pipe when you turn off the water. But before I installed that a few years ago, below 20 and I would cover it. It would have frozen this weekend when we were below 32 for 40 hours.

I cover mine every year before it gets to freezing temps. Mine still freeze several times each year, but they've never burst.

I have those insulated square things that go on the spicket. I put them on if it's going to be below 30 for more than 8 hours.

If it looks like it'll dip into the teens, I usually wrap the faucets and in several layers......

All of mine are like this. It was a simple question I asked my plumber during construction. "What do the people up North in Simsport do?" He said use bibs with the valve seats inside the wall, and put the building entry on the South side of the house.

Unless your house has exposed pipes throughout, you're fine.

I still don't understand. Does Louisiana use inferior materials? Why are things fine order places at -30 but pipes break at 30 if uncovered in Louisiana?

Below freezing and always use the tap insulation you can buy at Home Depot or Lowes.

Has anyone here had a faucet freeze and bust?

If so, about how cold was it that night?

Back in 80's when it hit 18 in Baton Rouge neighbor had an interior pipe burst. That was a mess.

but has it ever happened to you? Your house holds and creates a lot of warmth. That small spigot protruding out probably isn't causing any issue as its being warmed by the house. Same reason its very rare we ever get icy roads. Just not cold enough, long enough to overcome the heat stored. Never seen one bust.

Now, exposed pipes.....yes. Even if it's a short section exposed near the spigot. But the spigot itself up against a brick exterior.....I don't see an issue. I grew up in a house off the ground, never had an issue. Have had pipes bust at the camp though.

Back when I use to do plumbing we never really suggested it. As long as you have your cold AND HOT dripping you will be fine as long as it's all on the same supply. Allowing it to drip releases pressure of anywhere the pipe/faucet/hose bib may freeze thus they wont swell and burst.

If you go outside and put insulation on a pipe or hose bib It will still get as cold as it is outside. There is no source of heat unless its coming thru a wall on the house. Still by dripping faucet you are fine.

Ill also add generally here in Louisiana the peak calls for busted lines were when it was 20ish or lower and often times on a hot line because people forget to drip the hot side.

Yes, there are freeze proof hose bibs. They are rather long because the stem and actual seal where it cuts the water off is not on the outside of the house like a traditional hose bib. It is on the inside of the wall.

TL:DR
Unless there is a heat source (IE your home) insulating is'nt going to work. It will not freeze as fast but will still freeze. Drip hot and cold side on the same water source you will be fine.

I've had it happen at an outdoor sink. It was probably in the low-mid teens. I usually wrap it when it gets that cold but forgot that night
