Round eyes, let it ride. He's a good guy
this is the correct answer

Pic is too grainy for me to see the eye. But yes OP if round, it is pest control. Looking at its pattern, its a pretty good young cottonmouth impression.

All about the eyes, unless the OP is tough enough to grab him by hand and look at the scales behind his a-hole. The snakes not the OP.

Cottonmouth, without a doubt.

Agreed. Beyond a shadow of a doubt.

A juvenile cottonmouth, by the way.

It has the classic markings, body shape, head shape and base coloration of a juvenile cottonmouth. Mean little jumpy frickers.

100% it’s a Cottonmouth. The pattern give it away dead to rights; they are some mean bastards.

Edit: y’all guys who say it’s a banded water snake are dangerously wrong. The eyes are pixelated in this poor quality picture, but everything else screams out pit viper: the scale pattern, the thick midsection, the way it holds it’s head UP off the ground.

That would be a dead snake if I saw it on my property. Plenty of other, non-poisonous snakes for pest-control, don’t need that gettin my dog or kid.

If it is short, muscular, black or brown, doesn’t have an oval head and acts like an a-hole, it’s a cottonmouth/moccasin.

If it is black and doesn’t look like that, it isn’t.

If it looks like a rattlesnake, it’s a rattlesnake.

If it looks like a copperhead, it’s a copperhead.

It’s always the big black snakes that people ask about here.

They are racers, rat snakes, banded water snakes, etc.

When you come across a black snake that is a moccasin, you won’t have to post here.

Don’t know why I got so many downvotes. It is a Cottonmouth. Everything about it. They move certain way with their head postured, the pattern, the overall body, the top of head, the zorro mask, the pixelation, etc.

Not my fault y’all don’t know snakes but damn y’all gonna get someone hurt telling them it’s non venomous.

ETA.... Round eyes are a terrible way to judge a snake bc venomous snakes can also have round eyes.

You are a snake stupid and have no business commenting on a snake identification thread.
