Not sorry for you
Eta If the likes of Newman and Sacred Heart are the benchmark for your comment, then I have to agree that spending 30K a year on any grade schooling or high schooling is fricking stupid.

Not having to live around people like you.

I am fortunate enough to have an employer who doesn't care where I live. My job isn't dependent on the Louisiana economy, my income isn't based on my Louisiana residency & I can move anywhere I want. The ONLY reason I am in Louisiana is because of family. I have young kids & I have parents & inlaws who are getting old. My priority is for my kids to know their grandparents (and by extension their aunts/uncles/cousins/etc) before it's too late.
Having said all that. I choose not to sit back and bitch about how shitty Louisiana is. I choose to live in a nice, safe neighborhood and send my kids to a great 'non-mediocre' private school. I choose to travel with my family to other parts of the country so my kids can see there's more out there than just Louisiana & they'll be better prepared to decide where to go to college and/or live when they get older.
FTR, I got out for 15 years (lived in Dallas) & came back.

I have lived all over the world. I have travelled.
I will never live outside Louisiana again.
One side of my family was uprooted during le grand derangement and sent back to France. They left and came here to join their family in New Orleans and then moved to the swamp to make money with timber. The other side saw Germany walking toward stupidity in the late 1800s and moved to Michigan. A year later they were in Louisiana.
We have roots here. Deep ones.
There are good people everywhere, but the hardheaded stubbornness of your average louisianian is something I hold dear to my heart.

TSA pre check and business class ticket gets you past the line fairly quick lol.
When I get to MSY I typically take 610 to the swamp first (Houma/brother) and/or take 90 to WBK Expressway (Parents).
I would say that takes about 45 min either direction because of proxy of where family lives.

I just left LA and can tell ya the following:
1) other places have dysfunctional govt agencies, bad roads, traffic, and crime; and
2) that the myth of cheap TX real estate is just that...a myth.
Houston metro housing is actually a considered a bubble, according to the Dallas Federal Reserve. And, the property taxes on a home in a new suburban neighborhood far outweighed my property + income tax in LA, so we had to buy a 25 yr old home so the Municipal Utility District tax on a new home wouldn't eat us up.
We did save money on home and auto insurance though.
I will report back on how the schools are in a year or two.

Pros:
Beautiful women with impeccably low moral standards.
And the fact that you can get crab meat on literally any dish.
Cons:
Lack of statues.

Family and a job.
I stayed because of family, have no good reason to leave until I hit retirement age at my job in 10 years, and will be unlikely to move before my youngest finishes HS in about 13 years because of my wife's issues regarding uprooting a kid from a school right before graduation.

My wife has major issues with this because she moved around a lot as a kid and often had to change schools. Suggesting that we look around has been a non starter with her (she's not even from here) because of the kids school and my parents

my wife's issue is that I didn't want to move 15 years ago when she wanted to. (Very poor decision in hindsight). Not only is she holding a grudge over it, she also built a very successful business here so I'm pretty well fricked on getting out of here till we retire.
