What keeps most people from hitting me with their cars when I am walking on the sidewalk?

There is alot of trust from pedestrians when walking on a sidewalk beside a busy road. From where does that trust originate?

We mainly take it for granted that someone isn’t going to intentionally swerve over and hit us.

A - Genuinely don’t want to hurt another person
B - Scared of the legal repercussions
C - Don’t want to damage their cars
D - Other

You walk next to a road and you are making the assumption that complete strangers will act to ensure your safety. Where does that assumption come from?

Started jogging recently.

It's amazingly terrifying to count the number of people playing on their phones while driving.

You ever think how much trust it takes to drive at another car at 70 miles an hour and trust they will stay on their side of that paint line....I think about that all the time.
