It isn't built, but one example of this is raising canes.
I remember when the only two locations were the one right outside the north gates of campus and on Lee. The chicken fingers were better quality. They started opening more location and all of a sudden the chicken fingers just didn't have the same quality. They didn't give as much fries in a box than they did before. It was small changes, but as they expanded they found ways to cut cost. They probably was able to get their chicken fingers for a little bit cheaper and by cutting back on the quantity of fries then it obviously cuts the amount of fries you have to buy.. Which is just good business.

For the life of me I can't figure out why my grandfather had the same set of screw drivers for decades, but I have to replace mine bc the damn tips wear out.

It depends where you buy your materials, and yes, us true finish carpenters do exist. We just are not cheap. That’s why you won’t find us working for many of your home builders today. I understand where you are coming from though.

Tools for sure. I have a a drill that my brother and I gave our Dad for Christmas when we were kids in the mid 70's. Even though it is a Black & Decker that thing is heavy and still runs great. It is at least 40 plus years old.

Your grandfather bought a higher quality set and spent more adjusted dollars on it. At that time there were not options for really cheap tools. In all honesty, there is a place for cheap Chinese tools, thee are people that may use a screwdriver once a year and even a $10 set of 20 drivers may well last them 20 years. If you want better screwdrivers simply buy Felo, Wera, Wiha, Snap On and in most cases Klein.
As I stated earlier hand tools are one of the things you can buy with similar quality and much more innovation than similar tools from 50 years ago.
