Despite it being repeated tools is a really poor example here unless you are buying crap, which apparently most people here are. Even with power tools, you can still get high quality tools and ones that are far more innovative and simply better at doing the job.
Some high quality hand power tool brands:
Fein
Hilti
Festool (primarily woodworking)
Metabo
Then you have some manufacturers that are primarily prosumer but still make some very high quality versions of tools they were known for, Makita, Milwaukee and Porter Cable for example.
There is simply no excuse to have poor quality tools in today's market unless one is simply too cheap to buy quality.

Interestingly enough, if you read up on them just a bit, they WERE made lighter back in the olden days.
Lodge is about the only domestic manufacturer, and they aren't nearly as smooth as the old ones and the sides are much thicker.

Refrigerators and washing machines used to last damn near forever but what tops the list for me is air conditioners..your lucky to get 7 years out of one nowadays! And don't get me started on damn lawnmowers

I bought a Kenmore icebox(freezer on one side, fridge on the other) and Kenmore Elite washer(large topload) and dryer almost 10 years ago. Not a single problem with either one. Maybe I just got lucky.
