What is your Threshold for changing Auto Insurance Companies?

My auto insurance renews in mid-October, so I just got my renewal with Progressive. No accidents, use the Snapshot discount as well. It's an older car (2011 Honda Accord with 270,000 miles) so I just get liability, don't even bother with comprehensive or collision unless I'm getting a rental car for a trip. Renewal for the next 6 month period went up $100.
Progressive rep says my previous rate included an $85 discount for an electronic signature that was one time. So that was essentially most of the increase. Kind of gave me attitude, essentially saying "be thankful it didn't go up more."
I was with Geico until April, when they tried to raise my homeowner's insurance like crazy. So I ended up leaving Geico, getting homeowner's with Edison Insurance and getting auto with Progressive.
I usually shop around each year but really wanted to just not bother with anything until the spring in terms of insurance. Are we really getting to the point where you have to shop around each renewal period? Do you shop around each renewal period?
And what is your threshold for changing companies for auto insurance? For me typically if it's $50 or less, I don't bother. If it's $50-$100, I could go either way, if it's $100 or more I'm absolutely switching. Just looked at Geico again and their rate is $88 lower so I'm considering it.
What is your threshold for deciding if you change insurance companies or not for auto insurance?

I speak this as a former independent agency owner, but if you use one, and they’re not shitty, they would do this work for you, as it is literally their job to find you the best rate at the best price.

State Farm agent kept calling and asking why my daughter's life insurance hasn't been paid in 6 months.
Check your records before calling me a liar.

That's what I did with my condo insurance. I unbundled from Geico (I previously had both auto and condo with Geico) and got a good deal for condo insurance with an independent agency. Then went to Progressive for auto insurance. I'll probably keep using the independent agency for condo insurance going forward.
As a former independent agency owner, do you think we are now at the point where you have to shop and probably switch every 6 months to get the best price?

GEICO and Progressive models are built on starting low, then increasing every renewal, and hoping you’re lazy.
We had a flowchart at my place:
We’d inform you of your renewal, and if it went up
1-3%, no big deal.
3-9%, we’d ask you if you wanted shopped
10%, we’d shop for you and give you your options.

This is just my anecdotal experience, but they count on you not bothering with it. Typically, I go back and forth between GEICO and Progressive every 18 months. Both jack up your premium each six month period without any valid explanation. When the renewal figure comes in after two six month policies, I get a quote from the other one. So far, the quote to switch back has saved 25-40%. After 18 months, rinse/repeat.

I use a buddy from high school who is an independent agent. He tells me/suggest who to go with and when to look at changing.

Shop it every year. There is -0- friction involved in changing, other than setting up an account and autopay, hitting print for your new card.

I left Liberty Mutual after 30 years because they kept increasing premiums

Pro tip for progressive if you already have them
Get a quote for a new policy online. It’ll ask you if you are already a progressive customer, click yes. Get the quote, put date to start before old policy expires. Google it, I do it every six months and it’s always lower than a renewal. Google progressive requote

I switched from Progressive after 15 years to a Costco Auto Insurance and haven’t looked back. It’s only like $400-500 for two vehicles two people for my wife and I. Progressive was trying to charge me $290 a month on a beater I was about to donate and I flipped immediately.

One of the auto insurance underwriting factors are "how long have you been with your previous insurance company?"
The longer you have been with your current company, the more you could save on fresh quotes.
Quoting every 6 months is fine. But switching every 6 months is counter-productive for getting "best rates" (anything under 1 year is getting the worst rating on prior tenure score).
The best time to calendar new quotes is 36 months and 60 months after a moving violation/at-fault claim. Or if you see a single year increase roughly 15%+. And then 2-3 years after starting with your current auto insurance company.

I have All state with 2 teen drivers. 6 month renewal just went down 800 dollars.

In Georgia, Progressive and Clearcover are the best insurance companies for not raising renewal premiums.
If you have a speeding ticket or at fault accident, they will hit you harder. But with a clean history, they often have no rate increases.
