Terrible plane compared to what they were up against. However, the total dominance of the aircraft over the Soviet hardware in the period is a testament to how incredible our pilots were. Those guys could have flown cropdusters and still manage to shoot down the communist.

Good chance that plane was reported by some person as a UFO when they saw it flying

I’ve read a lot about the SR-71.

Great stories of the development, mechanics and operation of the aircraft.

We should have kept some to gather intelligence that is sometimes unavailable to satellites due to timing or weather.

I’ll throw in another vote for the A10. One of the prettiest ever made was the P51 Mustang.

Outstanding. Calverton or Bethpage? I love hearing accounts of the ole' Iron Works.

Bethpage

He loved that job and went into a pit of depression when Grumman left Long Island. He's never been as happy at a job as he was then.

The company picnics were amazing. Held on their private airport, we would watch all of the Grumman aircraft fly overhead as we ate burgers and played games

He also helped engineer/test one of the concepts for Reagan's "Star Wars" space based missile defense system.

Why was the F-14 retired.

Old tech that couldn’t be updated easily?

Which is funny that the Soviets eventually built a real MiG-31 (but it was the Foxhound).

Gimme the B1 Lancer...sweep wings and the ability to drop 75,000 lbs. of bombs up to Mach 2.2. Badass!

The F106A Delta Dart beat the F4 in dogfighting trials back in 1961, but because the F4 had a better radar USAF Tactical Command bought F4's and Air Defense Command bought no new 106's.

The Delta Dart was a fine aircraft with a great safety record, very underrated.

F106 pilots would tell you they would fly rings around F4's and some claimed you give them F15 avionics and they'd beat them.
