we also had a doberman when i was younger, great dog, would love to get another but having a hard time convincing the wife.

I'd love a red one, bad arse dogs

Why not? They appear to be smart and extremely affectionate and gentle dogs. Like I mentioned earlier, we're kicking around the idea of getting one. My wife only cares about the doberman not having cropped ears.

My big boy was 130 lbs. He was stout. I'd lay on the couch and get him to play tug-o-war, and he'd drag me and the couch across the room.

Sorry for all the stories, but now y'all got me thinking of him. One of his best traits was respecting a command even when he had the means not to. I could put a small box in a doorway, tell him to stay on that side, and he wouldn't even try to come across, even though he could have gone around it, over it, or through it.

He did hate his kennel, but he was potty trained almost immediately, and after that regretful night that he chewed my cell phone to pieces as a pup (it hurt him more than it hurt me), he never so much as sniffed a sock or anything that wasn't his with the intention of chewing on it.

I would suggest not getting one as a family dog, but if you are a male living alone and you want something that is intimidating.. Then that's a good bet.

98% chance I'll stick with labs. If it was anything else, I'd go BMC

Ever since Arnold bit that other dog and cockblocked Turtle I've been skeptical of the breed.

When I lived in the Lower Garden District years ago, I returned from the grocery store one night and popped the trunk. I sensed something and a huge head poked inside my trunk. A Rott. I froze in terror but heard the owner yell for him. He was the sweetest dog and was curious if I had anything for him. I later learned he grew up with a ferret. The ferret passed and the rott went into a deep depression. Howling, crying all the time.

Great dogs. Very smart. Excellent family dogs. They love to cuddle and are very loyal. Easy to train.

These are German bloodlines. What are the deference between the American bloodline and German?

In no way shape or form in the same arena as a Pit Bull.

Rott's are great dogs - very loving and loyal.

I had one as a kid. Huge teddy bears if raised properly and not chained up all day.

Rotties are very protective over their family though.

This is what gets families in trouble with large semi aggressive dog breeds.

Sure they are sweet and cuddly with the nuclear family, but they can be problematic when other people come over.

In my experience, dogs like that can be loose cannons that may corner guests when the owners are out of sight.

I was surprised they were on the list of breeds not allowed on one of the Lithettes house lease

size shape and temperament. American being smaller, slimmed down, and more domesticated than the German lines. Basically the doberman you envision is the american blood line with the german temperament. But the aggressive guard dog has mostly been bred out. Im afraid mime will lick an intruder to death.
