Just absolutely untrue. Rottweilers were one of many breeds used in creating the first Dobermans, but they were never one in the same. Rotties are said to date back to the Roman empire and Dobes are only about 150 years old.

OP,

I have grown up with Rott's my entire life. our family just had an affinity for the breed. had some from well respected & professional breeders in various parts of the country and some from the other end of that spectrum.

Best Rott ever owned was from the other end of that spectrum. (and recently passed) I was extremely lucky to have found him. Best temperament, stature, build, markings, etc.

Lotta truth in this thread on Rott's being great dogs. Basically and most important common theme is don't raise it to be an a-hole. we had one that was sent to be trained to be a guard dog. he had the potential to be an a-hole if provoked. because that's how he was trained.

if you want a family dog, then familiarize it with children and other dogs as much as possible while its a puppy.

example: when my rott was a puppy (mentioned earlier) i did not want him to become territorial of his food bowl. so i made sure that every time i fed him, i sat on the ground right next to him and would push his head around and get all up in his grill while he ate. This backfired in a sense because he would not eat unless someone was standing or sitting near him until the day he died.

They are very smart, loyal and family oriented if raised in that proper environment.

They're instinctively Alpha dogs. So you have to set the tone early that you are in charge.

we currently have a rescue rott that was clearly from a puppy mill. sweetest thing in the world & happy as can be but going blind. He doesn't have many years left in him I'm afraid.

If you are really looking into getting one. I suggest getting one in the ~100-120 pound range. I think they call that a "show breed" or something similar. we had a superior breed (~165#) and he died really young at 4. They do NOT do well in the LA heat and humidity.

130. But the doberman of 130 years ago is completely different then the doberman of today. they were very fierce and violent to anyone other then the handler back then. The guy bred them to protect him while walking around the streets collecting taxes. That temperament is said to have been gone since the 1930s. But since the military, law enforcement, and business owners still use them as guard dogs they still have that persona. They are extremely loyal family memebers and will bark to protect us but thats about it. once he sees what the threat is he will run up and lick it.

Beautiful dog.

Looks a lot like my late dog. I could make her sit there like that and eat something in front of her without sharing, and she would have drool from her mouth all the way to the floor.
