Luke 16 22-24

Is a parable essentially showing how the wealthy are so corrupted that they would not believe their own family risen from the grave to tell them they are being tormented. It's not meant to be taken as there is literally a burning pit you will be tossed down.

This is the only reference of "fires" w/Hades (which is from Greek/Roman paganism) and is only in Luke.

There are three different places that have almost all been converted to Hell in most modern (western) Bibles thanks to King James.

Roughly speaking

Hades - Greek underworld for humans

Tartarus - Greek underworld for Gods (converted into fallen Angels by Christians)

Gehenna - could have simply been a place where trash was burned outside of Jerusalem but is also possibly where infant sacrifices occurred

If hell as a fiery pit for all sinners really was a concept that JC was pushing it would be made very clear in Matthew, Luke, Mark, and John. It isn't b/c that concept wasn't there until much later after the Bible was translated many times by many different people who had many different agendas.

Instead what we have is a bunch of stuff that looks like it was adapted from other religions in an effort to make emerging Christianity more palatable to to locals they were trying to convert.

Interesting you raise Keller and hint at God's wrath in the same thread, as I was just reading a John Piper article about Keller and that topic.

Lol, I actually don't think I read that one. LINK?

I just finished Making Sense of God. One of the best apologetics books of all time in my opinion. For people who've listened to and read Keller, some of it is a rehash, but the entire package is extremely compelling.

I just finished Counterfeit Gods, which was also fantastic. But yeah, when you listen to him often you can can see how many topics are intertwined. Not a bad thing...

No. I treat communion the way Jesus did at the Last Supper.

Man came later and built some walls around it.

So can we expect him to say there are 72 virgins for each of us that make it to heaven?

I agree with much of what you've written. But I was just pointing out, to say there is NO biblical reference to fire or Hades, in my opinion, is quashed by Luke 16:22-24.

quote:

If hell as a fiery pit for all sinners really was a concept that JC was pushing it would be made very clear in Matthew, Luke, Mark, and John. It isn't b/c that concept wasn't there until much later after the Bible was translated many times by many different people who had many different agendas.

Other verses that you might want to consider:

Matthew 13:49-50:
This is how it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come and separate the wicked from the righteous and throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Matthew 5:22:
But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire.

Matthew 24:41
Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.

Matthew 3:12:
His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”

Matthew 13:41-42
The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will gather out of his kingdom all causes of sin and all law-breakers, and throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Jude 1:7:
Just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which likewise indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural desire, serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire.

I'm getting tired...but there are more.

Eh, I was Methodist and was interested in Catholicism and decided to take classes and learn about the beliefs and nobody told me I couldn’t. Wasn’t a big deal to fully understand the faith before partaking. Seems like a good idea to me.

Fake news. Read the entire article. The Vatican claims the Pope never said that.

From the Vatican:

quote:

"The Holy Father Francis recently received the founder of the newspaper La Repubblica in a private meeting on the occasion of Easter, without however giving him any interviews. What is reported by the author in today’s article [in La Repubblica] is the result of his reconstruction, in which the textual words pronounced by the Pope are not quoted. No quotation of the aforementioned article must therefore be considered as a faithful transcription of the words of the Holy Father."

So, article is bogus.

Not necessarily arguing here, but if this is true, where are you pulling "original text" from?

I've always believed that it was difficult to assume current translations of the Bible were "infallible" or could be taken as the definitive word of God given how many "hands" it has passed through over centuries and how many variations exist now. But, as Festus has pointed out (Matt 25:41, btw), the "fiery" reference to Hell is made in numerous areas in scripture. Thus, how is it we can be so sure one way or the other; that it exists in that form or that it doesn't?

I suppose if we don't follow the path to getting there, it won't matter one way or the other.
