The Catholic church can continue as a humanitarian force without being much of a force for Christianity in the world.
I'm not convinced that is what is happening, but I don't think charity alone answers the question.

I’d say giving to the poor is pretty darn Christian and consistent with Jesus’ teachings...
Edit: but you’re right it’s not everything, I misconstrued what you said

Google the Pope and Argentina Dirty War. This motherfricker has blood on his hands.

Yeah I mean, one could question "why" the church is so engaged in charity and conclude that it's the epitome of Christ-like service. And at least in some cases, I'm sure it is.
Unfortunately, I think the humanitarian aspects of both Catholic and Protestant organizations are driven more and more by secularly-minded people. And it's increasingly less purely charitable (feeding the hungry, building houses, etc.) it's participating in thinly-veiled (or completely open) political advocacy.
Even when it is what I might label "genuine charity" it raises the question of whether these are still positive forces for the faith. On one hand, service is central to Christianity. On the other hand, taking Christ out of Christian service is a precarious path for churches.

Hell contradicts the idea of an all-forgiving and all-loving God.

That's an outright denial of the word of God. He gone.

Interesting you raise Keller and hint at God's wrath in the same thread, as I was just reading a John Piper article about Keller and that topic.

If you believe what they do and want to take communion in the Catholic Church then go become Catholic and do it, otherwise why complain?
Because it is the Lord's table, not the Catholics.
I should not have to believe in what they do, I should believe in God. His body was broken for all of us, his blood was shed for all of us.
We use religion to build a wall between us and God.
We are all His children and therefore should be treated equally among our religious leaders.

Do you believe in transubstantiation or not? That’s the crux of the issue.
Esit: spelled that word wrong, whoops.

I bet he will have meatloaf for lunch tomorrow too.

I am really not being obtuse. Of course "people" think that. People think a lot of stupid shite. But I don't look to the advice of the great unwashed masses when it comes to heady topics, except maybe as a contraindicator.
Christ said, did, claimed, and lived out a lot of things that were directly and fundamentally opposed to the Judaism of his day. I can list the numerous ways in which his teaching and the Christology of the Apostles is in no way annihilistic.
But I agree, the eternal physical punishment and being banished to hell ideas are dumb and extremely harmful.

Truth !
No one better at this than the Catholic Church and this pope is taking it to the next level.

It's extremely obvious that the only viable branch of Christianity left is that of the neo-reformed type. E.g. Tim Keller.
Those are the only folks actually making a difference, and the only people with solid reasoning to life's difficult questions.
I just finished Making Sense of God. One of the best apologetics books of all time in my opinion. For people who've listened to and read Keller, some of it is a rehash, but the entire package is extremely compelling.

I was taught that hell wasn't exactly a place, just eternity without any of God's light.
Not an uncommon teaching or belief. An eternity of conscious nothingness spent with thought, memories, regret, and awareness sounds pretty hellish to me.

I was raised Catholic and was always taught that hell is just denial of heaven. There's no fire pit with demons or anything like that.

Is this where Tom Hanks comes in and drives out some demons or something?

Yep the parable of Lazarus and the Rich Man in Luke 16 is harrowing to me.
