The Mississippi delta. That is by far the most depressing place on earth. I had to visit Ita Bina (or however it’s spelled) once for work and holy crap that was like taking a time machine back to 1940.

I've seen extreme poverty in Morroco and Egypt but honestly the worst place I've ever seen is Skid Row in Los Angeles. Hopelessness and despair. Hell on Earth. It is one of the final destinations for mental illness and addiction.

Of the places I have spent more than a night in Delhi and Caracas top the list. Cambodia is the country I disliked the most.

A small village in Honduras. Not because of the danger or anything, but because it was the first time I witnessed true poverty.
Not American poverty. Real poverty.
That or New Orleans in the immediate aftermath of Katrina. That’s not an OT style dig on New Orleans, it was just horrible to witness.

any county in Appalachia without an interstate.
I've travelled a little and can tell you that rural Yucatan peninsula Mx is worse that Appalachia by a long shot. Can you understand the abject poverty the locals have to endure in never ending oppressive high heat and humidity, with no electricity / modern conveniences? Cooking all your meals in a campfire?
On the other hand, I've never been to Somalia, Yemen, Vietnam, remote areas of Africa, or Siberia in the winter. Appalachia or any place in the US is paradise compared to these shiteholes.

I don’t remember the name of the town, but it was in Northern Alabama. We were in Alabama for storm work for one of the storms that came before Katrina. We stopped at some truck stop/restaurant that had a buffet, but you had to pay before getting a glimpse of what was on the buffet. On the buffet line was a tray of gravy and hog jaws, and when I say hog jaws, I mean bones and everything. I was born and raised in SE Louisiana and I ain’t never looked at hog jaws staring back at me at a buffet,

Golden Meadows, La. Although the arresting officer co-signed my check to pay the fine. Gotta love it.
