What is the point of Mardi Gras?

To eat, drink, and sin to excess before the lenten season? Seems like you could reduce your lenten penance by not acting like a frat baw this weekend and leading up to Ash Wednesday.
Plus all the additional calories that are taken in. Just a gross, disturbing event.
