Did you see that at the movie theaters? Or were you one of those rich kids with the first TVs?

It was in the papers. My grandfather sat at the kitchen table drinking coffee reading the Picayune incredulous that one bomb could wipe out an entire city.

BTW, there were no commercial tv stations in Louisiana at that time.

I only go back to September, 1938. You've got me a few years.

Vague remembrance of family talking about Elvis dying. First solid memory of a major news event is Reagan being shot.

JFK's funeral on a black and white TV, full coverage played most of daytime hours over 2 days I think, rare on those days.

Got me hooked on news and current events.

I remember watching some politician commit suicide on live tv. Guy was in trouble for something and pulled a gun out and killed him self during his press conference.

Budd Dwyer, Pennsylvania State Treasurer, 1987. There is an excellent documentary about this story on Amazon Prime, “Honest Man: The Life of R. Budd Dwyer“.

Convicted of bribery. Poor guy was innocent in my mind. I remember seeing the video and people begging him not to kill himself, he was well-liked. Sad story.

Elvis dying while visiting my grandparents house. Random.

I was also visiting my grandparents house when Elvis died. I remember going into the room my parents were in and telling them. I don’t remember if they already knew or not.

But the earliest news stories I remember have to do with Vietnam POWs being released. Very vague memories of those stories.

This is it for me too. I slept on the floor of my parents bedroom thinking we were going to get blown up. All I kept hearing was that there was a daycare inside and a bunch of kids were killed. I was 5.
