What is the most you would consider spending on a vehicle?

My wife is an architect who makes pretty good money and my salary is more than double her's, but I just can't bring myself to spend more than $18K on a car/truck. I have accepted that I'll never be able to have anything new again.

My brother is a doctor in a small, financially-depressed town in north Alabama, and we're constantly blown away at what we see people driving there. Guys who make $35-$40K driving newer 3/4 ton pickups and such.

What is your limit, and how did you arrive at that number?

Bought a used Lariat a couple of years ago for $28K. Put $8K down, financed the rest.

Guess I'd go up to $40K+ as long as my cash inflow continues to increase. I'm 26 now. Got time I'd like to think.

The most I would spend now is 0. I have two good vehicles. I don't need a new car now at any price.

Buying an expensive car for the sake of it has always seemed like a waste to me. Unless I get to a position to where I don't have to worry about money at all, I can't see myself spending more than $25,000 for a car/truck. Just seems like a terrible investment to spend money on something that depreciates so quickly.

That's just me though. Nice cars were never really a high priority of mine. I just want reliability and something I can pay off quickly.

I've got no hard and fast rule. Anything more than $15k or so is a waste from a financial standpoint, but that's not the only relevant factor. If I can afford it, I want it, and it doesn't jeopardize more significant priorities, then I'll consider buying it.

That seems the be the sweet spot where I can find a private-party vehicle that I like with a good bit of life left.

For instance, I now have an 2010 F-150 4x4 that I got with 90K miles for $14K and my work car is a 2011 Subaru Outback that I got with 80K miles for $9800 (after the F-150 was paid for).

I calculate that most of the depreciation is gone by the time they reach the 80-100K mile mark, but they still have at least half of their life expectancy left.
