Jeremy’s attempt to destroy a Toyota Hilux will go down as one of the greatest features ever to appear on Top Gear. The tough Hilux survived an attempt to kill it with fire, drown it in the Seven Estuary and drop it from a tower block in Hackney.

J100 Land Cruiser and 1980s Mercedes Benz S are both good candidates.

Those are tanks too. I had a 2007 model Silverado. I put about 170,000 trouble free miles on it...just followed the manufacturer's maintenance instructions.

For a single vehicle, it's hard to imagine another vehicle will ever approach what Toyota did with this one. There's a reason anyone attempting to travel in backwoods Africa chooses this vehicle. It's just functional, no frills, durable, no nonsense awesomeness.

For the average American car buyer though, I just don't see anyone beating Subaru. I own and have owned 2 Tundras and wife drives an Acura(not sold on it because I think it uses too much oil) but I'd still give the nod to Subaru.

Japanese cars were garbage in 1978.

We've got a 2014 Outback. Hopefully you are right. It's unstoppable in the snow.

I have a 1991 Isuzu trooper, that has 325,000 miles on it. The only repair has been a $15 Idler pulley.

It has a 2.8liter Chevy V6,Asaan 5speed auto transmission, and axles (same as Toyota uses),New Process transfer case.

It doesn't use any oil to this day,and the transmission shifts like a new one and that has never been serviced.

Compared to now? Yes.
Compared to American 1978 cars? Not quite.

What criteria are we using? There are lots of cars out there that will run for ever but are otherwise complete pieces of shite, Geo Prizm anyone?

Fun to drive, cheap, easy to work on. I think the 240zx and mita win that one pretty easily.

Well thought out, comfortable, reliable power train. W126, some of the big body lexus sedans, any xc series volvo except for the early v8's and the T6. You have on other than general motors to thank for the t6 being a turd. E34 with the six speed is one of the greatest cars of all time. The E30 gets the nod for best block.

Most reliable power train, but everything else is worthless. Anything built on the carolla platform. Same for the camry. Some of the cars that share the ford crown vic platform are pretty good but handle like boats. I put the Land cruisers in this category mostly because I've never met one without suspension or differential issues. Anything with the jeep 4.0 and three speed auto as long as it's not a 99-2001.

Porsche makes some good shite.

If you know someone who collects cars, not someone who has five or six, more like five or six dozen. You will notice there is always a constant in all their collections. They all seem to own a J80, a W123 or 126, a v12 E38 (maybe the greatest car every made), a volvo xc90, and lurking somewhere on the property is a 4.0 XJ.

Having said 4runner, I love my 1.5 gen xterra 4x4.

It will hit 175000 miles this week. Next week we are driving to canada. Only maintenance I'll do before we leave is change the oil 500 miles early and check the tire pressure.

That 3.3 is a good motor. Careful with the timing belt though.

Poor engine components and rust issues...

American cars weren't fantastic in 78, but they weren't rusting right away or burning oil after 50K.

The "Japanese cars are better" is a generalization. Toyota and Subaru are solid, but you also have Mitubishi, Nissan, and Mazda which are average at best (that's being generous).

I do a timing belt and waterpump every 105k. And because parts are ridiculously cheap for this thing: switched over to the supercharged radiator (twin core), changed every single vacuum and coolant hose, and changed the heater core posts. Under 300 bucks for everything.

The only thing that pissed me off was where they put the knock sensor. I relocated it before it became an issue and opened the top end up to see what things looked like. All is as new.

That was a good episode. I'm still baffled how BBC let the three idiots leave the program and go to Amazon.

I think my LCI E60 5 series is going to last for an incredibly long time. Naturally aspirated I6 with a manual. Built like a tank. It won't be cheap, but it'll drive like the day it was made for a long, long time.
