While not a match for the W126 Mercedes, the military-grade trucks are supposed to be pretty stout in civilian hands.

Land Rover Defender (my favorite SUV)

General Motors Hummer H1 Alpha

Mercedes-Benz G550

Toyota Land Cruiser Series 70

Americans can actually buy the Mercedes G550.

They couldn't be cooler, but they're not well made. Poor welds, inadequate rust proofing, parts that don't align properly, antiquated and underpowered engines... Rover just never had the money to do it right.

My personal pick would be a W124, although I think the W123 and W126 look better.

The Defender is pretty sturdy as a no-frills military truck. Those things are a far cry from the pimped out Discovery and Range Rover's you see clocking up service departments everywhere. You are right about them having some build quality issues though. Their durability was in their simplicity....certainly because of the workmanship.

Sadly, they haven't been made available to the American market for a long time now. I really, really want one.

This, this, this all day long and it's not even a contest. Late 98 is when MB started getting sloppy, same with BMW. Thank the bean counters for terrible early 2000's reliability.

The R129 and the W124 were really the last ones worth buying.

Would agree. The leasing programs of the early 2000's really put on blemish on both manufacturers.

No way in hell I'd buy a 2000-present BMW. Wouldn't even lease one, but I'd rock an E30/36 all day long.

My father has an 04 SL and I was shocked at the really chintzy quality of certain things in the car, and the car has incredibly low miles. My Mom's E350 definitely feels like a more solid car

Yep.

I think the Tuscaloosa-built W163 chassis products came out in the US market around the time of the Chrysler merger.....and it may have been worse than anything Chrysler was building at the time. That was the official transition from a "good" car company to an "expensive" car company.

If that wasn't the low point of Mercedes-Benz in the American market, then there's a good chance we are there right now....with the W176-based CLA and GLA shite boxes all over the place. The GLC looks like a complete joke as well.

Compared to American 1978 cars? Not quite.

Nah, they were crap.

Voluntary export quotas in the 80's saw Japanese companies move to producing higher end products and they've never looked back.

Honda Accord

My family has owned a lot of Hondas, and can attest that they do indeed make a fantastic engine. The problem is that the rest of the car is a crapshoot on it lasting more than 5 years.

Agree on the 2000-2006 GM trucks/suv's. They're tanks. Love those trucks. 2007-2013 are absolute garbage though.. Had to rebuild the engine on my 09' Silverado and it still burnt oil after. Got rid of it earlier this year. Bought an 06' Tahoe Z71 and love it. Perfect for what I need from a car. Runs and looks great. Best part, no car note.

Yeah we are about to get rid of our Accord. Only 60,000 miles and the transmission is on the way out. This was our first Honda and I'm honestly not impressed at all.

It's still way less problematic than our Toyota Camrys were. That's not saying much though.

But does your Camry have one or more of these? :)
