I am 55. I tried to think hard and came up with Jimmy Carter being elected President. In Georgia, that was very popular and I was in the 1st grade. Death of Elvis was 2nd and Iranian Hostages was 3rd.

Elvis dying. The king is gone.

I was 10 when I watched the Moon Landing live.
I was so excited at Mankind;s greatest accomplishment.
But I distinctly remember betting my younger brother that over 5 decades from then, there would be a plethora of clueless idiots claiming it to be faked.

1954 - was listening to radio one night and they broke in with the news that Roger Bannister had broken the 4-minute mile barrier.
Went to school the next morning and nobody would believe me - considered it impossible.

Kennedy assassination.
That is the first TV story that I consider "major news" - was at work when the announcement was made that he had been assassinated - but saw Jack Ruby shoot Lee Harvey Oswald two days later on live TV.

Swine flu outbreak of 1976. Told my mom I didn’t want to get a shot.

Saw the challenger explosion on tv in the first grade. Teacher had it in the tv that rolled in the classroom. We all didn’t realize what happened and then another teacher came to the room and was acting frantic and went up to our teacher and said something that alarmed her. Then we knew.
It was sooo cold that day in south Alabama. When I got home from school it was all over the news.

Either the 1992 election or the 1993 WTC bombing

The Howard Johnson sniper. Walked into house and my mom was glued to tv just tripping out.

I’m a month shy of turning 39, but I vaguely remember the initial launch of US troops from Kuwait in 1990. I would have been 3 years old.
I also remember the events surrounding the Clinton inauguration. I don’t really remember the inauguration itself, but I remember watching news reports of Bush leaving after the inauguration on Marine One because I was (still am) a huge aviation nerd.
The earliest clear recollection of a major news event was probably the events surrounding Waco in 1993 then the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995.
