They are all very nice if you like snow. Snowmobiling, skiing and ice fishing (in the bob house of course) in the winter and a ton of outdoor activities when the snow melts. There's some good mountain biking around the ski resorts. The mountains are just tall enough get into the alpine zone and enjoy, but dangerous enough to respect.
You can go sailing or kayaking on some really big lakes (Champlain/Ontario/Winnipesaukee/George/Finger Lakes). I've gone out on Chaplain in some pretty big waves with a sea kayak and done island camping. Some nice fishing up here too with big salmon, trout, walleye, etc.
If you're not doing something outdoors up here you're really missing out.
P.S. I would imagine Hawaii would be a pretty good spot for outdoor recreation.

States that encompass everything especially surf and ski aka beaches and mountains. California, Hawaii, North Carolina, Oregon... if access wasn’t an issue Alaska would be included on my list. Summers are outstanding there. Y’all can have Colorado it’s far too dry, but send beer.

You can ski year around on the icefield in Juneau.

In California (especially northern California), the places where people live are not where the majority of the trails are. In contrast, the major population areas of Oregon, Washington and Utah are all within about 30-45 minutes of trails as good as any in California. In the case of Utah you have insane trails on big mountains almost within SLC city limits. I’m no rich man and unfortunately can’t afford to live in Tahoe, would much rather live in SLC, Portland, Seattle or Denver for outdoors recreation than LA or SF.

Washington is up there for me unless you want white sandy beaches with warm water. I've hiked, kayaked, gone rafting and biking all over the northwestern areas. It's absolutely beautiful and not usually swamp arse hot.

IMO, to have it all and maximize the number of activities you must have the mountains and the coast in close proximity. That leaves Maine, Oregon, Alaska, Hawaii, Washington, and California.
I’m also a big into fishing; despite what you hear, fishing is shite over much of the western US. The action is very slow for larger prey. One of the few exceptions is California with their bass and coastal fishery.
I would take California > Maine > Hawaii.

By the way, there would be 5 million people in Maine if it were warmer. Spent 5 years there; loved it, but wouldn’t move back. They had a major snowstorm a couple weeks ago.
