If you want a pit then get them at a kill shelter. Make sure to ask a bout the history of the dog as some were involved in fighting and thus cannot be saved. Others were just kept alive for breeding purposes and were confined in a cage for it's natural life.
I have a pit Staffordshire that was rescued from a breeder. She is a bout 14 with no teeth. She could die any day.
Another is a full blooded terrier and he was found in a cage, skin and bones. Animal control officer took him as the owner was gone. Owner came back and demanded the officer to return the dog back. The officer said that if I do then I will charge you with animal cruelty. The owner backed off.
I have a boxer named spanky and his owners left him to die chained to a tree. Deputy sheriff wanted to put him down but I said that wasn't necessary. Nicest dog I ever had.

I have a Black Mouth Cur/German Shepard mix. Best dog I’ve ever had. He is smart as a whip, will get pissed if you mess with his family, but kids can climb all over him and he doesn’t care.

Our two Boxers are very kid friendly but do get protective around strangers. Not so much barking or growling, but they will not leave her side if someone new is around.

Lab or golden. My lab would come sleep literally under my bed when I came in for college. They’re loyal and obedient. Family always had one around.

This quickly turned into a "what is your favorite breed" thread.

This x1000. They are so smart and protective. They won’t jump all over kids like most dogs do. We have two and when they wife’s 7 year old cousin comes over she can tell mine “hug time boys” and they lay down and let her love all over them

quote:When we were having our first child, we went to those "new parent" classes. One night was a speech, then Q & A with a pediatrician. The subject finally came up about pets and kids. He advised against having cats near a baby, due to their propensity of having fecal matter on their feet from using a litter box. Then he went onto dogs. He talked about just how quickly things could go very badly with your "great dog" that you've had for years. He told a story about his friend that had some kind of hound. Kids were playing and running in the back yard, and for whatever reason, the dog's prey drive kicked in, and it chased a running kid and tore her scalp back. Needless to say, the doc had everyone kinda worried about whatever dog they had at home. Then someone asked about Labs. His whole expression changed, and stated that they only real worry you would have from a Lab around a kid is, they might get knocked down from it's wagging tail.
Lab or golden retriever is the only way to go. I’ll never understand how idiots put a pit bull around a small child. It’s just irresponsible.
I've had a bunch of Labs over the years, and personally think their is no better family dog.........if you can put up with the shedding. We now have two Goldendoodles due to that. I loved my Labs, but the doodles have the same traits without the shedding. Something to keep in mind if your kid develops allergies to dog dander/hair.

We have a little Maltese Chihuahua mix who is a complete psycho. Avoid these dogs at all costs.

My 3 kids grew up boxers. They are known for how great they are with kids. Boxers are basically toddlers for life themselves, silly and goofy. But as someone mentioned they can have health problems. I’ve lost 2 way too early with cancer.
I currently have my 4th boxer and can’t imagine not getting another
