Looking to get the kids a dog and was wondering what everyone thought was the best breed to be around young children. Thanks.

A Great Pyrenees has a great temperament around children. But they shed like crazy and need a lot of space in the yard because they’re a pretty big dog in general.

Female lab or golden retriever. They'll be like a second mom.

Rescue. The shelter will help identify a gentle good natured dog. These dogs seem to understand they've gotten a second chance.

yellow lab then golden retriever, I have seen a few hyper retrievers but but not many

Black labs are sometimes kinda hyper but not as bad as chocolate labs in my experience.

Then I would say German Shepard. Which would be my number one choice.

I love my ridgeback he is great with kids.

Any dog and all dogs will be great with your kids. In my experience it's all about how much time you put into the training and get the whole family in board to make them great dogs. Half arse it and you will be one of those idiots on FB giving your dog away bc you ruined him. Nothing to do with the dog, those are bad owners.

We have a beagle/black lab mix. He is great with everyone, including kids.

Yes, Black Lab Mix (BLM) matters…

We just bought our daughter a female Pug puppy. Looks a lot like this one…

This is our second one. We also had one for our son when he was growing up. She lived almost 13 years before she passed. Best dog we’ve ever had. Really great family pet. Loves everyone, not too hyper and not an ounce of aggressiveness in them.

Just got a Spud Mckenzie /Target dog for my three boys. Age 13 -9. English Bull Terrier. They play hard then sleep the rest of the time. Quirky and funny too.

ETA.Just saw young so sorry not sure if this would be good for that. But they have high pain tolerance but can be chewy when playing as puppy.

Lab/Golden

If smaller, pugs are awesome small dogs. Not yappers/biters, just all around good dogs.

Pitbulls should never be around children unless you're willing to gamble with your child's life.

Another vote for a golden retriever. We got ours when my son was 5. The shedding is real though.

Forget the kids. This is my #1 question for every dog I get in the future. Love my German Shepherd but Jesus fricking Christ.

I was wondering how many pages it would take to find a German shepherd. Fantastic with kids and any other dog, even if only around temporarily. Definitely a lot of shedding, but that's manageable. That dog will only bark when there is truly a perceived threat though. Heard mine bark the other day, and I guess it's been a while since I have heard him bark... startled the frick out of me. I knew something was up though, and sure enough some strange dude that looked a little wacked out was at my door.
